I'd try Debian stable branch and install Wine to add compatibility for some Windows apps, note that not all Windows apps will work on it and some that work might not be perfect. But it's got plenty of Linux friendly, open source alternatives to choose from if the Windows versions don't work and you will find the resource usage of Debian to be second to none, it's really lightweight and will make your PC last for years to come, though your PC is Windows capable when you strip away all of Microsoft's bloated rubbish, heck I run a system with 4GB RAM and an i5 8250U on Windows 10 and with the right optimisations it runs flawlessly. Debian is also what Ubuntu is based upon so most if not all Ubuntu packages should play nicely.

In my opinion I'd stick with what you have for now and hold out until PC part prices are back to normal. That would give you time to save up for a decent custom rig and you'd still be able to achieve a good gaming experience with your current rig until prices go back to normal. I know you really really want to upgrade but prices are up because of the shortage of chips, meaning you might not be able to get your desired computer spec right now anyway.

Hmm, it seems like it could be a driver issue at a first glance. Have you downloaded DDU, rebooted into safe mode and then done a full driver clean and reinstalled the drivers after booting back into normal mode? If not, you might want to do that just to make sure that it's not a driver issue.

The CPU is far from underpowered, it's Windows 10 that happens to be the problem. Read my original comment, it should shed some light on some stuff for you

I'd like to expand on this comment from python, as he mentioned using a fresh install of Windows. You might want to try redoing your fresh Windows install, but this time try using some Windows 10 debloating tools, I highly recommend this one as it really does help clear up all of that unwanted, performance borking rubbish that Microsoft has added into Windows, it's really brought my oldest laptop back to life and that one has an i5 3317U in it so tools like this should definitely get your laptop running well once more. I'd also check the health of your SSD because despite it only being a recent addition to your system, there's still every chance that you could have a defective part. But if that's not the case, check that Windows is regularly optimising the drive by going to start, type in "defrag" and then run the "Defragment and optimise drives" option that shows up, this will show all your drives in your computer and it will allow you to either set a schedule for when drives are defragmented (HDDs) or optimised (TRIM operation performed on SSD) or you can manually perform these actions.

I don't see how a CX750M Grey label could be the problem since it meets requirements for the V56 but I suppose its a possibility.

tried +50 last night, didn't work. Gonna try -50% when I get home. The RAM frequency and timings were done by me, my XMP profile only goes up to 2800 C16.

Hey, need a little help with my new GPU. It keeps black screening in games and then the computer starts up again, I've tried using 2 power cables instead of daisy chaining, I've tried DDU and driver reinstall and I've tried to lock my memory voltages and memory clock speeds. It's an MSI Vega 56 (not airboost or morpheus), can be flashed to 64. Anyone got any idea of what's going on with it? Core specs of my system for those who need it: Ryzen 3 1200 (stock) MSI Vega 56 8GB Vengeance LPX DDR4 3133 C15 Corsair CX750M Grey Label I'm upgrading to a 3600 within the next couple months, just thought I'd mention that before I get someone who goes off topic and talks about my CPU.

Why not just program in something different? Plenty of different 3D stuff out there, why not DX or vulkan?

Go for a nice 850 Evo 500gb. Don't need a 1tb SSD unless you're only putting 1 drive in. Plenty say Samsung is overrated but they are the best for a reason: speed and reliability like no others. There are some other good SSDs out there though, maybe get something from crucial or teamgroup if you don't want to go Samsung.

I'd imagine so, they are designed to overclock after all. Dunno if it'd handle a ryzen 9 though, might want to do a bit of research on that.

Personally wouldn't bother investing in X570, just get yourself a nice cheap B450/X470 board. I have an ASRock B450M Pro4 and it's more than sufficient for me, there's a zen2 BIOS for it now too so maybe get something cheap alongside the 3600 like an Athlon 200GE just to update the bios then sell it. I'd imagine that you won't need to upgrade the bios though asmine came with the zen2 update preinstalled.

Well, it just did another little shutdown, no voltage or temp spikes from what I saw. Doubt it's my ram either, I tend to run a memtest86 at least once every week to ensure there's no faults with my ram.

I get what you meant, but I'm saying if I returned to linux (because windows is a ram hog) then I wouldn't be able to play 2 of my most frequently played titles.

BudgetBuildsOfficial is actually one of my favourite channels aside from Linus and Jay, mostly because its like having scrapyard wars all year round and you can actually pick up on how to get a decent rig for cheap using that channel. Discord community for that channel is pretty chill too, everyone seems to share love for tech and (most) of us love scrapyard wars so it's an ideal channel for us. Linus doing a europe based scrapyard wars would be fun though :).

hmm, the annoying thing is that if I were to return to linux, I wouldn't be able to play gta 4 or fallout 3 (tried both, they don't play very nicely with wine or lutris).

Usually around 5 - 10 minutes. Everything performs as normal (fps, frametime and graphics wise) it just randomly shuts down between 5 - 10 minutes. Odd because I've never had this trouble before on other systems I own, even ones that I used to run with the same PSU as this machine.
