So, this is interesting. An official Ubuntu Cinnamon flavour was just released. Have to say, it looks quite sharp. :)

    Yep

says here it's not official though.

I don't see much of a point when Ubuntu MATE exists and is very well made but hey.

@Sauron Not "official", my mistake. Fixed. ;)

Cinnamon is not like MATE though. I love Cinnamon, but MATE has always looked and felt "dated", IMO. I know a lot of people like MATE and that's fine - it's all part of the wide range of options we have with Linux. But after trying to use and get used to MATE, I just can't. It's just not for me. Cinnamon, though, is near perfect for me. Those two DE's aren't similar enough, IMO, to render one or the other redundant. They're quite different.

Well both MATE and Cinnamon are Gnome 2 forks and look pretty similar, how good they look depends on the theme pretty much. Those window decorations for instance look like default Breeze and you can use them on MATE quite easily.

I'm also willing to bet that "kimmo" theme can be easily installed and used on MATE as well, which would result in a desktop that looks basically identical to that screenshot.

Not that I'm complaining, more choice is always good, I just wouldn't invest my time in making it.

@Sauron It's not so much about the look and feel, themes can always be tweaked, as you said. For me, it's more about the functionality, features and the way UI is layed out. I just simply prefer Cinnamon, as all the menus, settings, and functionality feel more refined, modern and efficient to my personal liking.

@Levent Yep. And it works surprisingly well too. Pretty much all new major distro releases from Ubuntu, Mint, Manjaro, MX, Zorin and a few others, I test out this way on this machine. Nearly 10 years old and still runs like a top. :) Using an SSD helps massively too, lol.
