  1. Hi, Just been playing with FreeNAS 9.3 and noticed that the "Everyone" group is given read access to my CIFS shares by default. Do you know if this can be turned off? Changing permissions in the FreeNAS GUI re-applies the "everyone" group. Thanks.
  2. Got my Gen8 today! Think I made the right decision, it's been great so far. I went with an 8GB DIMM & took the stock 4GB one out - am I correct in thinking you aren't supposed to mix different sized DIMMs?
  3. Thanks, this actually looks like a far better all-round solution than what I originally had in mind. It'd be a bit cheaper than building a custom NAS, more compact, still has room for extra drives & I'd still have the existing PC (minus the 2 HDDs).
  4. True. There seems to be so few motherboards with ECC support! Do normal consumer NAS enclosures have ECC memory / the same risks associated with them?
  5. Hi, I was vaguely aware of non-ECC RAM being a risk, but maybe I underestimated the seriousness of this / the impact this could have on budget. A little background - at the moment I'm running FreeNAS in a knackered old machine with non-ECC RAM, but with a new PSU & hard drives. It's a cheap solution but definitely better than nothing! I was hoping to get a solid new case & low-end motherboard / CPU for < £100, but now I'm debating whether I should pay the extra for ECC support.
  6. Hi, I'm building a home NAS as a backup server and need some help choosing a budget motherboard & CPU. Case: BitFenix Phenom Mini-ITX (http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00FG6N0NW/?) PSU: Corsair CX430M RAM: 2x4GB HDD: 2xWD 3TB Green (more drives may be added in future) OS: FreeNAS I don't know whether the Mini-ITX boards with integrated CPUs are any good for running FreeNAS? Thanks.
  7. Okay so I've put a known good power supply in and still the same problem persists, changed ram to a different 4GB dimm and no changes... Going to try a different CPU, if not its got to be the motherboard
  8. Okay, so I've got a little further. Here's what I tried (booting to USB linux): Changed GPU from GTX 660 to an old AMD one (not sure of the model number) (problem persists) Unplugged front USB + HD Audio from motherboard (problem persists) Ran memtest from a USB drive -> No problems detected (problem persists) In bios, selected "Load optimized defaults" & disabled fast boot (problem persists) Flipped EPU switch on motherboard to ON (problem persists) (changed switch back to OFF) Reseated CPU by taking out / putting back in (problem persists) Removed SATA / 6PIN / molex cables from PSU which were't plugged into anything (now just the Motherboard cables are connected)(new error message) Before getting to the OS loading screen where it would normally hang, I now get this: Booted and froze on this for 2 restarts, now back to the original freezing on loading screen with ubuntu logo. I think it must've just frozen even earlier than normal this time. About to try a different power supply...
  9. Hi, yeah I tried without the GPU once with the windows 10 SSD but didn't seem to do anything different. Plus the motherboard doesn't have any on board graphics. I'm not sure it even got past post because there was a light on the motherboard for VGA. I haven't tried memtest? I can still get into the UEFI bios - that seems unaffected. Yeah I have another machine I use as a backup server, guess I can try the ram / CPU from that. It'll be tomorrow before I can do any more though. Thanks for the reply, I'll keep you posted.
  10. Hi, ** Edit: In the end it turned out to be a fault with the CPU. AMD sent me a free replacement under warranty, and actually upgraded me to an 8350! Thanks AMD ** Basically I can't boot from anything - I've tried 2 separate installs of windows (one on an SSD, one on an HDD), and even linux on a USB stick. Here's a summary of the problems I've encountered / steps I've attempted: Windows 10 install with SSD ========================== 1. Had a working windows 10 install on my machine. 2. It froze when I was browsing the internet -> I pressed and held the power button. 3. When it rebooted, got to the windows logo with the spinning dots. 4. The spinning dots froze but then CPU fan ramped up to 100%, got quite hot. No HDD activity based on the indicator light. 5. Hard rebooted -> got "Preparing automatic repair" screen with spinning dots. 6. Stuck in a boot loop. 7. Disconnected all peripherals + HDMI, no change 8. Changed SATA cable / SATA port on motherboard, no change Windows 7 install on HDD (from another computer I don't use any more, had never been plugged into this machine before now) ========================== 1. After windows 7 loading logo, got a blue screen of death: ----- Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDKS /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer. Technical information: *** STOP: 0X0000007B (0xFFFFF88000 ----- 2. Rebooted -> launch startup repair froze again on a loading screen 3. Still in a boot loop Ubuntu installed on a USB stick ========================== 1. Unplugged all peripherals except for the USB stick, then booted. 2. Got to loading screen with circles 3. Froze again after 2/4 circles, CPU started ramping up again, I rebooted it 4. Took RAM out, put 1 stick back in in another slot, no change. So what do you think I should do now? Could this be a motherboard / CPU issue? I'm totally stumped here! Thanks PC Specs =========================== OS: (The install where the issues started was Windows 10, which was upgraded from 7) CPU: AMD FX8320 Motherboard: ASUS M5A99X EVO R2.0 RAM: 2 x Hyperx Blu 8GB) GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 660 Storage: OCZ solid 3 SSD
  11. Its a tough one, I think they both look awesome but I've not seen either in the flesh - maybe that would help me decide Yeah that's a good argument, I guess the main selling point is that massive window which is unlike anything else I've ever seen! I was hoping someone might have built in both, is the 760T's build quality considered to be less overall or is it just because of the side panel? I agree, it seems like that is what people are telling me so far but there's a real trade-off between the two
  12. The Corsair 760T and the NZXT H440 are both lookers, but if you had to pick one which would you go for and why? Are they both equally as good or is one better? Cheers guys
  13. Good points about the dust, I didn't think of that. Cheers for the recommendation When I get my exams over with I want to do another build so will consider this for sure. Yeah I kind of guessed this was the case, it does look good but other than that I guess the marketing guys want to pretend there is actually a performance increase
  14. Hi, I know thermal armor looks cool but other than that does it make any difference to temperatures? Surely it would act as an insulator and actually increase temperatures?
