I see quite a lot of threads with people having issues with game stutters when using 8GB of RAM.

Thinking about doing some benchmark tests and reviews of 8GB vs 16GB RAM with my system so I can reference it when posting in the troubleshooting threads.

Any suggestions for games to be tested?

GTA V is one of the most common I see with issues with 8GB of RAM, so I'm definitely doing that one.
Probably do a mix of other games ranging from more eSports titles like LoL, Overwatch, Fortnite, and maybe CS:GO, and a bunch of more AAA titles like GTA V, Middle Earth Shadow of Mordor, Tomb Raider, etc.
Prefeably games that have built in benchmarks in order to get consistent results between runs, though I'd likely do 3x runs of each then average the result to remove some variance.

Also anyone have any recommendation for good software to log things like FPS and more importantly Frametime during benchmark runs?

<Yes, I'm aware there are probably a billion reviews of this on youtube already, but that doesn't mean I can't do it myself>

List of games available for testing.
Probably also do some synthetics like 3DMark and Superposition as well since they give a score that is easily quantified.
As well as Civilization CPU test and maybe Cinebench.

@Spotty Ubisoft games like WatchDogs 2 and others should also demonstrate it.

Think I have Watchdogs 1 so I might give that a go

Got to find a good way to capture frametime metrics as that's what's going to show the biggest variance with insufficient RAM that may not show up on average FPS.

@Spotty If you use Fraps then just save results file and load results into a program called "Frafs" and it'll do all the calculations for you

Just Cause 3 recommends 8GB of RAM but often still tells me I don't have enough system memory, and freezes very frequently(It's like $5 or something now until 30th october)

@_d0nut Tested on 8GB. Get a warning when I launch the game that 8GB may not be sufficient memory for the game.

So far it seemed to hold up fairly well... But I'm going to do a bit more testing and see how things pan out. It seems to be right on the limit of working with 8GB, so I think I can stress it a bit more by opening a couple of programs in the background to see if it causes issues...
Haven't yet tested in 16GB to compare but I'll let you know the final results when I have them.

What are the specs of your entire system? Your issues might be related to something else...

It’s a prebuilt from alienware so some of the parts are oem to dell/alienware

    i5-8400

GTX 1070(shroud looks like the msi aero one)

    460W PSU

    1 x 8GB DDR4@2666Mhz

    1TB HDD + 16GB Optane

    Z370 Micro-ATX Motherboard

Some shitty Dell Optiplex CPU Heatsink

Temps in game don’t exceed 70C and usage seems normal. RAM is often at 7-7.6GB usage so I believe some of it is being pagefiled to my hdd

Yeah definitely is ram related. If you're interested then ram upgrades are really easy. Just slot in another 8gb stick and it should solve your issues.

@Spotty The sad thing is the (almost exact configuration) above specs posted seem to be fairly common on the forums.

With the high prices of ddr4 memory in the last few years it's not surprising that a lot of people are running 8gb.

I should have done a little more research on my prebuilt. It seems that the motherboard won’t boot with some DDR4 modules, such as most G.Skill Sticks. I only found this out a day after my G.Skill TridentZ RGB(2x8gb @ 2666mhz)arrived and I can’t be bothered to exchange it. Really tempted to buy a new motherboard since this one looks like it was from 2008
