  1. Personally - I would always use windows built in defrag - regardless of what other companies say and do with their Defragment methods. and instead of using the "analyse" option just go straight into the defrag. . .
  2. Try a different PSU - detatch everything (including mouse and keyboard Use a PS2 keyboard if you have the ability to!) use on board Graphics only and check all your internal cables plugged into the motherboard, and the connections on pin headers. When you switch it on are you hearing Pre-Bios Beeping? if so check out what that beep means (google it)
  3. depends, I would probably trust Linus and the new Lady (Max I think her name is?) the most, as they tend to be more careful with other peoples things than their own - much like myself? as for the least, probably Nick - for the same reason, as he is so careful with everything at work, when he is out and about looking at someone elses PC for example he is probably a little more carefree @nicklmg can't wait for the Video montage of all of the clumsy accidents over the last couple of years in the office!
  4. Personally I would say that it's old age, but it also helps to look at the file types your writing to it, smaller or larger files?
  5. I wouldn't worry about getting it fixed, if it is definitely the GPU that's damaged. it could be a multitude of sins, from too much voltage going through it and frying something, to chips on the card needing to be reseated and re-soldered. (DON'T STICK IT IN THE OVEN like @LinusTech did!) Regardless, it just isn't worth the hassle. send the card on to circuit heaven! :'( R.I.P GTX 780
  6. can you not have the service that is being used identified by floatplane as wether it is plex or not. Surely there is some form of identifier that can be used? then it comes down to a simple piece of code that simply acts as a switch and enables or disables a service. (ID = "Plex" then Disable download) ok that code isn't accurate in the slightest - but you get the idea?
  7. well if they are double - sell your current RX 480 strix - for a higher price than you bought it for then buy yourself a 1080 ti or a 1060 ti
  8. as for the dimensions - they should be on the linked page!
  9. actually it will quite happily - the strength of the desk for what it is is suprising... the desk itself is very sturdy, and has happily held my weight when I was climbing on it to hang up a picture a week ago... and I weigh at 9 stone. *** This desk has the supporting boards centered on the underside of the desk rather than at the back, so not only will it hide cables very very well, but it makes it very stable. honestly though, it's cheap enough to try out and at the very least have a nice laptop study desk if you don't think it's right for your setup...
  10. So for the record I have purchased this desk https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B06X1H22XJ - I am looking to build my PC Rig into the shelving unit thatcan be seen in the images on Amazon with measurements here below too!, I am looking at using the EK water cooling set A240 But was wondering what sort of design layout people would choose to have their PC set up with? Designs - show me your designs, and also where you get the plexiglass from cheap enough to make doors with for the shelving unit... One of your designs may well get picked so make it Good and Feasable - My Budget is not an issue. unless it's going to cost over £300 All listed parts are accounted for already, so only Extras in the design need to be costed up! hardware to be inserted AMD Ryzen Motherboard RGB Lighting GTX 1080 Ti EVGA 750 W PSU 4 2.5" SSD's 2 3.5" HDD's EK A240 Water cooling kit Also Bonus Items - Custom Cables (from Cablemod!) - Theme - Got to match the black desk! - RGB (in theme) - Red Coolant Liquid! Lets see what your designs are!
  11. Actually I have a perfect solution for this! Believe it or not - for less than £80 too... plus it is cheap enough to build your PC into it and get another one if you mess up, and actually looks pretty awesome... Let me post a link to it... (Now where's Linus's Affiliate link - should add that to the end of the address too...) https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01MZITAVJ/ It is also flatpacked and it gets my cats (Pixie) seal of approval!!!
  12. I would recommend ublock origin over adblock for a number of reasons, which I think is a subject that should have it's own forum thread!!! Regardless, Free software Antivirus - you can always try Sophos Home! https://home.sophos.com/
  13. @nicklmg @LinusTech Many of us on here are enthusiasts, and your forums and channels are great for that sort of thing. BUT I feel there is a whole chunk of the market that is being missed, for whenever I search for technology news related to businesses, well here are the top google results! As you can see there is a huge gap in the market, and I was wondering despite being an enthusiast Grade Media group,is there a whole new genre that could be looked into? one that creates a whole new channel for yourselves, with more opportunities down the line? and yes LMG you can have this idea for free! You see, IT Forums are pretty much all that System administrators in business has, and perhaps something Even a mini series of shows on the emerging technologies, and recommended practices, explaining the concepts and technologies, practices, and enterprise guides and how to's for things ranging from Active directory and group policy, through to server administration in "Bitesize" chunks and possibly even a whole new Business Tech shorts every couple of weeks? I mean you get the idea. and you have to admit there is a gap in the market there!! Do you think that could be worth a consideration?
  14. They will check a cmd window yes, but ESET for example - will only take notice of it if a win32 system file is edited, - if User files are edited, then it's going to ignore. especially if all it's doing is zipping the files up
  15. Anything in the main "c:\Users\USERNAME\" Folder that isn't a system service, so User created files in Desktop, Documents, Downloads, (Possibly Onedrive - if Sync is enabled and Onedrive share is on the C:\ Partition!) Pictures, and Videos, because of the nature of the way it works, it may even be possible to do the same on other partitions as well. ************* EDIT : Onedrive Sync! if this was able to do this with the onedrive folder that is located on C:\ Would this then reference the deletion of the files and zip archive online - or the other way round? would Onedrive resync whats on the Cloud back to the Desktop?
  16. Something else that I think ought to be put to the test, I am sure a number of modern AV's might over look it!
  17. which then begs the question why people aren't doing this as a form of malware at this time, because this is command line - no admin privileges needed. add password randomly generated and upload password to server via SFTP - delete original password file - reboot machine and run a code that looks like checkdisk but wipes the drive of "free space" making recovery of deleted files impossible but from a backup, and this would include the deleted password. run from a batch script with the silent / yes to all / never notify switches and bobs your uncle. then before shut down new Text File is created on the desktop - reading the ransom... This wouldn't get picked up by an antivirus at all... and all this from file explorer and command line... Yeah @vorticalbox That is a worry. EDIT: Perhaps someone at Linus media group could check this out and make a video on it's possibility in windows 10 as a project?
  18. try using Aeomi Disk partition manager (its free) and will allow you to do what you want in a "out of windows" boot mode it's GUI too and you will need to confirm all changes before they are commited so if you screw something up in the planning stage, you can just hit the undo button, personally I use this all the time to the point i bought a license. it runs under windows just fine, make changes check them, and apply. http://www.aomeitech.com/ it's also good for migrating an OS to an SSD from a HDD - Something i have had to do multiple times for people lately. (edited to update content and correct mistakes)
  19. Aye but thats just part of the issue - I know far to many people that just click ok or accept at this part of UAC not bothering to read what it actually is!
  20. whats wrong with setting the group policy in such a way that it stops executable files or applications that run malicious macros or other malicious code from operating out of the worst offending folders in windows - which includes the "windows temp" and the "appdata temp" folders - or creating a policy that any software running out of these folders on the close of the application has to destroy the data in that folder on close. then add the protections mentioned to the remainder of the system... For that matter why do we even have those folders whats the point of them - if the apps that run by windows are run in a sandbox environment by default in windows then surely that would resolve the issues too.because you can then run an application assess it and then if you at the end of the session with that application want to save your stuff as you close you get presented with an option of "Commit or Discard changes" then you as the end user can control what is written to the windows envrioment. Alternatively, run windows in a sandbox environment and have documents etc in their own partitioned section of the OS. surely some of these ideas would be a lot more protective than just adding a few whitelist applications to a list. i mean how hard can it be to write a powershell script that will allow the addition of an item / app into the white list that executes itself on the triggering of malware, wiper, or ransomware this list business isn't going to save anyone thanks to the linux like powers of powershell.
