This is all sort of a long boring story, so I will try to cut to the chase, but I want to back up my home erver off-site. Fast access wasn't really a priority for me so I was going to go with an amazon glacier bucket, but for a penny more backblaze acts more like s3 than glacier for my needs, so that's what i've been playing with, but I'm still searching for a good backup client. They all seem to have problems for my use case from what i can tell. The main reason i chose B2 is because im running a server OS, so solutions like carbonite, or backblaze's workstation style backups are off the table. I would consider switching to glacier if i had to to get a better backup client. I have about 2TB of data currently. I've put a list of what I've tried below, I may end up forking over the insane amount for cloudberry if I have to, as it's a one time fee and i like the software, but it's very expensve for personal use so I was hoping someone may know of something that would suit my needs better. I was also thinking RSYNC, but that wouldnt give me versioning etc. Any and all feedback appreciated, thanks. Clients I've tried so far: Cloudberry Backup Server Edition Price: 299.99 USD Pros: Excellent backup manager, backs up files in original form to B2, handles versioning, retention, etc Cons: Price! they offer solutions at lower price points, but they impose a 1tb restriction making it useless for me in all but it's most expensive version qBackup Price: 29.99 USD Pros: Fast, easy to use, can be used for free if you do not need more than 30 day retention Cons: Backs up to proprietary format on cloud, not full featured Duplicacy Price: 20 USD /yr Pros: easy to use Cons: subscription based, propritary format on cloud, not full featured

Any way to change a VM's IP adress without a VPN?
GW2 replied to Cyberspirit's topic in Servers, NAS, and Home Lab
Ours are all running on similar hardware i'll have to do some tracerts and see how many hops. there may be nothing I can do, but I'm definitely gonna try. Thanks for the input. -

Can I ask what VPN software you were using. I've tried many paid VPNs and even run VPNs at many of our client sites, but they are always horribly slow and the clients often have synchronous gigabit fibre. -
Buy a Synology NAS and be done with it! Shit, buy a QNAP, I don't care. You are over-complicating things in your original post, you would use one server with a share for each user that the others dont have access to. This is true using a full server or a NAS. and ya, 10TB per person is INSANE! especially considering you need redundancy. Another thing to remember is that if these people move something from their PC to their share, its not a backup anymore, it's now the original, so how are you backing up this server? You'd be forced into using cloud backup or buying a 4 (or maybe 8) drive RAID enclosure to backup the server to, which costs about as much as a NAS to begin with.

VPNs are SLOW, thats my VPN mantra. if you want to hide your IP via a VPN you will see major performance degradation because of the additional overhead of the VPN. It's why I never use one, and probably never will. I just don't like the idea of getting 1/10th my internet speed for the sake of privacy, that I probably am not going to get anyway. -
There's an app called Threema, it does end to end secure messaging, it uses a server (as do ALL messaging apps) and if you connect to someone that way they have 1 level of security, then theres another way to get the second level (i dont remember how), and the third level of securty (true end to end) comes when you meet with someone physically and scan each others secure pattern, it's much like a QR code, but it isnt. This solves all of their needs, and has already been developed. Calling something VERY encrypted is hilarious. You are going to need a server, that's pretty much end of story. all the devices will need to have something to phone home to so they know each others IP etc. I think you might be in over your head. Why would anyone make a custom app for secure messaging? there are a million out there!

It's because the APs are not aware of each other, I don't want to be rude or anything because I'm far from a network expert, but I really don't think Skywake knows what he's talking about in this situation (I'm sorry Skywake, I'm poor at phrasing things nicely). Maybe that works if you buy devices which are ONLY WAPs (like the unifi) but two router/WAP combos will not play nice together like that. @skywake I beg of you! Please make me look like an idiot for my harsh words. If this is as possible as you say I'd really love to get it working in that way with two routers, even just as an experiment.

IP conflict maybe? did you have to set a static IP when you went to the LAN party? check that your IP settings are set to automatically obtain from DHCP server, check the DHCP table on the router and make a note of all IPs connected when the PC is off and then when on, see if you see any conflicts.

if you have the issue on wired connections too then it's probably the modem/router combo. another thing to try is to put it in bridge mode & connect a device wired to see if it experiences the issue. other than that it would likely be an ISP issue, either with the lines to your apartment or in your apartment. You need to keep on them about it, i know it's frustrating but they will always brush you off if you let them. ISPs are pretty bad for that.

Mesh (the unif) is the proper solution, using two WAPs which aren't aware of each other leads to it never getting handed off. I don't know what clients skywake is working with, but for me personally this has NEVER worked. If you buy two identical routers and connect one on an upper floor and another on a lower floor, if the device is still connected to the lower AP it will not hand itself over to the other AP. I find wifi clients hang onto their AP very aggressively, even to the point where performance degrades severely or even completely. The mesh unifi network solves all of these problem, and it a set it and forget solution. I frequently setup Unifi's for Partners at the companies I server by setting them up from home and then installing them with no unifi controller on site, after setup they run themselves, no need for the controller. For the price you'd be nuts to go with anything else, it's just so easy and convenient.

I use the UAP AC LR for my home use as i like the extended range. not sure the difference between AC PRO & AC LR but man do they ever work great!

Yes we need some details. what windows version, what hardware, what drives? you may need to load the AHCI or SATA drive from a usb stick. you can usually download it form the motherboard manufacturers website. I ran into this when installing Windows Server 2008 R2 on my home server but eventually gave up and ran 2012. For some reason 2008 R2 install just wouldn't see my disks.

Are you made out of money? also can I borrow some? also borrow might mean you never get it back.

Honestly I'd go for the crucial, it;s not that much slower, and you can get twice the capacity for the same price last time I checked.
