  1. The CPU list says it is with the latest BIOS (they even say the 5950X is supported, although I would not want to run that with this board!!)
  2. Hi all, I have a Gigabyte AB350 Gaming3 mobo and want to upgrade to a 5000 series CPU from my OG 1700. I need to update BIOS of course, am I right in thinking if I upgrade to the newest BIOS I can't use the 1700 any more? There doesn't seem to be anything on the F52i BIOS to say it can't and I can't only see on previous ones it says about Raven Ridge not being supported, but not Summit Ridge (I REALLY wish they could just stick to the actual series numbers and not the codenames). I remember there being a thing about supporting the newer CPUs was at the expense of running the older CPUs but that doesn't seem to be the case or am I missing something? To actually upgrade though, I understand I would update BIOS with newest version, then remove old CPU, install new CPU and reboot? I can really see why people don't upgrade BIOS' Any help appreciated! https://www.gigabyte.com/uk/Motherboard/GA-AB350-Gaming-3-rev-1x/support#support-dl-bios
  3. So I bit the bullet and got myself a RTX2080 Super (I'd have got the Ti but it is stupid expensive). Overall I am really happy with it, I can now get a pretty solid VR experience with more quality now, not to mention other games can play in high quality and in 4K to. I have been wondering what to do with my GTX1080 that it replaced. Most times I upgrade I keep the old one as a backup in case of issues with the new one, especially as my 1080 is a proven reliable card. I got to thinking though (it is a dangerous habit of mine...) is there any point of keeping it installed in my machine as a second card? I mean I can't think of any real reason, other than additional outputs if I wanted to connect more monitors up (2 x 4K displays, VR and HDTV seem enough though). Obviously the 1080 can't be sli'd so it would offer nothing for enhancing processing power. So other than 'because I can' does anyone have any thoughts on a practical reason to leave the card installed?
  4. Just played the Quake RTX demo on my machine with my GTX1080. Dunno why people keep on about needing RTX cards, played fine! Got a whole 24FPS!! (at 1280x720... Don't ask what it was running at when at 1920x1080... Okay it was 13FPS stop asking!!) Actually it did remind me of my first time playing Doom (the original) on my 486SX25. Had to scale the window right down on that to so that the frame rate was somewhat bearable to...
  5. Hi All, I am appealing for help with this as Dell are as much use as a chocolate tea pot in the middle of the sahara desert while making tea (not sure where I was going with that but they are useless). I have a 2017 Alienware 13 R3 which has pretty much killed the battery, I get about 45 minutes off of it. I really need to find a new one but Dell won't reply (I am willing to pay the extra to buy from them as well!) and I am not sure where would be the best place to get one. I've been searching and found a few places but I am never that confident about some places and would rather have suggestions for places people may have already brought from. I am in the UK so a UK/European supplier would be preferred but willing to go further afield in order to get one that will work. I know I am small fry for a company such as Dell, but for all they know I might be the person who works for a big company and is responsible for buying all their computer kit! Anyone got suggestions on reputable suppliers? Many thanks!
  6. Gamer Meld has a video with supposed true info about the 1180...
  7. So I got to thinking - dangerous. When I built my PC I had 2 sticks of 3000MHz Corsair RAM in it at 8GB each. The motherboard (an AMD B350 chipset) accepted the XMP profile and all was happy. I was brought a second set and discovered that my motherboard/BIOS combo do not like 4 sticks when overclocked. And at 2133MHz my Ryzen stuttered all over the place in games. I checked the compatibility sheet for the mobo and sure enough, my RAM is only supported with 2 sticks. It make me want to know why it will support 2 sticks but not 4. What changes? Especially when the faster version of the stick is compatible with 4 installed. I had a little look on the interweb but mostly I found people asking why their machine doesn't work when they put 4 sticks in or similar with the response of "check compatibility". Never found a reason as to WHY this compatibility is an issue. On another note, does anyone want to buy 2 sticks of 8GB 3000MHz Corsair Vengence RAM? LOL
  8. So I have pretty much finished my build. My first build with a window so I have tried (maybe not successfully yet!) to tidy up the cables as best I can. The hardware can been seen here: https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/TL6Bnn This is also the first machine I have built with the latest fad that makes a PC at least 25% faster, RGB LIGHTING!!! I had a 5 meter reel of RGB LEDs for a totally un related project and needed only about 2ish of them. With some of the remainder I made a small adaptor to connect to the motherboards case RGB header. Purple FTW I love purple Currently it has an AIO CPU cooler with a 240 Radiator. I am trying to justify to myself changing that to a full custom waterloop including the graphics card as well. I just can't justify the cost as the GPU runs without getting super hot anyway and is clocked at just under 2000MHz. The only reason I can think of is to do it to tidy up the way the pipes are currently coming out of the CPU block/pump. You can also see my slightly janky 80mm fan for the CPU VRMs to help keep them cooler under load. I say janky, it is mounted with a 3D printed bracket that connects to the 140mm fan at the back - the real janky time was when I had the 80mm fan jammed between the CPU block and 140mm fan LOL. Overall I am happy with it and have some options for the future
  9. Hypothetical situation. Given that TR has 64 PCIe lanes could you have 4 GFX cards, one pair NVIDIA in SLI and the second pair, AMD in crossfire? This is nothing more than a thought exercise! I am just curious to if this would work not as to the why (its pointless!). Although would give you the best option to choose between best setup for a given game if one favours one over the other LOL But yes this is pointless practically, yet interesting (to me) thinking about it. Just like the idea that TR gives you the opportunity to have both options in one machine
  10. I have thought that as well. When ever you see a business using VR it is more often then not the Vive.
  11. Can I ask for my money back for paying the higher price?
  12. Yeah you can. I play Elite Dangerous on occasion and it is great in there with a HOTAS that has enough buttons for all the bindings you'll need LOL I have the Saitek X-55 which is serving me well thus far. Problem with increased pixel density is the proportional (or is that exponential?!) increase in graphics power needed LOL The Vive would actually look better if they could get rid of the space between the pixels, that would go a long way to improving the apparent quality without needing to increase the number of pixels. Doubt it could be done though. Although I agree, once the GPUs have enough compute power for 2 x 4k screens at 90+FPS that would be AMAZING
  13. For me it was one of the worst! It was the one that made all the tech companies go 'hmmmm translucent plastic, that's niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice' when actually pretty much every product made with it looked trash in my eyes (yes including the Mac). Don't get me wrong, I loved the OS but hated the machine design and a gawd awful 'mouse' that came with it!
  14. Just to update my issue. I rechecked the part number of my memory and compared it to stealth80's RAM guide and noticed that my modules don't work with 4 modules Take out slots 3 & 4 and I can get it working at full speed using XMP as well. So frustrating
  15. I think he means the higher the display refresh rate is, the more g-sync will be of an advantage when the games frame rate is low. So a game at 45FPS will use GSync more with a 144Hz screen then a 60Hz screen.
