  1. Im building a new PC and will be running a Samsung 850 Evo SSD as my boot drive/programs. Looking at a storage drive around 6TB and cant decide between WD Black or Blue. My computer needs are primarily photography (photoshop), light gaming, and overall fast every day use. The question I have, as Im not too familiar with how this all works is, if I will be holding all my RAW files on this HD should i opt for the higher performance Black or will the Blues be just fine? 1) does having my photos in this HDD slow anything down if the programs im working off of are on the SSD? 2) will I see any difference whether it be thumbnails responding faster, file transfers between the HDD to SSD? 3) what potential bottle necking am I dealing with having RAW files on the HDD, if any? 4) should i care about any performance difference/optimization when it comes to this usage? 5) lastly, will the black be considerably louder? I hear it is, but honestly with everything else in the PC, is this really a concern? Im not really sure where the performance of the drives comes into play when its for moving files around and working off the drive for opening my photos...when the SSD will be running Photoshop. I honestly dont understand where I need my speed to be and if it matters when it comes to having the RAW files stored and opened from...any and all help much appreciated.
  2. Also, any thoughts on Be Quiet Shadow Wings Slim? or Cryorig H7? these are the 2 im looking at (i know there are better options) but I want that RAM clearance.
  3. thanks for the feedback! the evolv is definitely the case ive had my eyes on and I feel like any other case I will just regret not getting the evolv. Good advice on moving fans up. I was also thinking of running a 140mm fan in the back top, running at a lower rpm to just help push air out the top a bit, but not too hard so it doesnt just come back in since its pretty blocked. what do you think? can i even change the speed of just 1 fan? ive built a computer in the past but im not too familiar with things.
  4. Thanks for the response. I feel ya, im searching for (my version of perfection) from reviewers/youtubers thats really are taking things to another level of perfection I would never go to. But when they are my resource for information I end up extremely indecisive. I miss the days when there were less options lol.
  5. Im in the process of building a new computer and am stuck on which case to buy. I have had my heart set on the Phanteks Enthoo Evolv ATX TG but recent research leads me to believe this case can run hot.? I will be air cooling this system as water cooling just makes me uncomfortable. A close runner up for me is the Corsair 570x, which looks like it has a lot more air flow and still great looking. Any experience with the Phanteks case being air cooled? With the small slits on top and front (mostly the top seems to be where the problem is) it appears this case may have issues exhausting the hot air. Any fans that might perform better than the Phanteks ones it comes with? and/or fan configuration? I really am anxious to start my build but need this problem solved, as all I have been doing is theory crafting and reading a million reviews on both cases. The Phanteks has amazing reviews but most everyone is water cooling their build. Would love feedback on an air cooled system. Also, thoughts on the Corsair 570x case? Seems like it is a very open case, in fact possibly too much for proper front air intake to rear/top exhaust. Potential issues I see is dust accumulation...and its not my first choice.. but at the end of the day I would rather have my system running cool. all and any feedback greatly appreciated. HELP ME system is i7 7700k & gtx 1070,
  6. I'm curious, what was/is your phanteks setup... as far as CPU cooler and case fans? I did some reading regarding the different fan technologies and the name is eluding me now but there are fans that have better air pressure vs high speed air flow that are supposedly better for cases such as the Evolv where the air has to go around edges and not large open spaces.
  7. got it. ya I would like to do a RAID 1, just dont want to give myself any possible headaches. was considering a WD RAID 1 external that does it automatically
  8. which is so weird if does have these temp issues since its such a popular case on the internet community. Yes most of the them are air cooling, but damn.
  9. oh man, you are confirming my fear. I thought about this, and was just hoping that if I didnt OC temps wouldnt be an issue. But this news throws me off majorly since I have never seen a more amazing looking case than the Enthoo Evolv, and it was honestly what motivated me to start this build.
  10. Hi thanks the for the response. I hear you on the Ryzen option, it was definitely on my radar. I know having that 6 cores seems better to me, but after my research online I found many sources proving that Photoshop doesnt use many cores and therefore the performance on the i7 actually beat out the Ryzen...as far as Photo editing goes. Since Im not familiar with setting up a RAID with HD I wont be doing it. But im curious cuz I have been wondering...are you recommending the Reds over Blues ? if so why? Lastly, you mention a 750w PSU, my first option was the one in your build, however again, after research everyone is saying that I wouldn't need more than 550w. Do you have any thoughts on this?
  11. Ive been working on my perfect build for about a month now, researching parts, narrowing everything down, and asking the PC community for advice. My budget is around $1500 (I already have a GPU). I need help on final picks for the build. More specifically Storage solutions, CPU cooler, and PSU size. Inspired by the Phanteks Enthoo Evolv tempered glass edition , this build is aimed for photo editing, gaming, and overall fast as possible performance for regular use. While looks shouldn't be a factor, I cant help myself with this sexy Phanteks case. I will be going for a Grey/Black color scheme...and some part choices/options embarrassingly are because I think they look good and match my theme. -No overclocking, maybe light overclocking -Must be Air Cooled (AIO coolers just worry me, and I leave my computer on a lot) -After research AMD Ryzen is not optimal for Photoshop so I will definitely be going Intel as its what I know and am comfortable with. Case: Phanteks Enthoo Evolve ATX (tempered glass edition) (Grey) MB: Asus z270 Hero (or Strix if I want to save some money and be more practical with my cost since I wont be using a lot of the feature of the Hero...but here is where matching my case comes into play with the grey/black.. hence why not the Prime) CPU: Intel i7 7700k Kaby Lake (while chances are I wont be overclocking, I am attracted to the higher base clock speed of the "K") CPU Cooler: Options -Be Quiet Shadow Rocks Slim -Be Quiet Dark Rock 3 -Cryorig H7 GPU: Asus GTX 960 (works good enough for light gaming/photoshop) RAM: Corsair Vengeance DDR4 LED 32gb SSD Boot/Programs: Options -Samsung 850 Evo 500gb -Samsung 850 Evo 1tb -Samsung 960 Evo M.2 500gb HDD Storage: 6tb -Western Digital Black (or) -Western Digital Blue PSU: Options (Im kind of a corsair fanboy so I dont mind the slight price premium over EVGA) -Corsair Rm 550x -Corsair Rm 650x External HD: WD MyBook 6tb (backup/redundancy) Final Thoughts/questions : 1) Which Air cooler to you suggest for cooling i7 7700k Stock/light OC (prefer not to have a GIANT cooler) open to options not on the list 2) What size PSU should I get? 550w or 650w for optimal power consumption ....I plan to upgrade GPU in the future (I dont run SLI) and I have 2 1440p Monitors 3) Storage for SSD boot/programs .. 500gb or 1tb? I like the idea of having more than enough than not enough, however the price jump has me leaning towards 500gb and Im guessing its all I really need. 4) Data Storage for RAW photos and everything else. WD Black for speed or Blue for price/noise? Thoughts on the Blacks noise level? Is the Black a noticeable difference vs the blue for read/write 5) Any other thoughts on over all build? any other suggestions? as Im ready to pull the trigger on this build but I want it to be perfect before I do.
  12. Thanks, I will consider an EVGA PSU as I know they are great quality for less of a price. Is there a specific one you would recommend? I was thinking the WD Black for performance so that copying files etc, would go faster, you think that the Reds or Blues would be a better option and not sacrifice much performance? when it comes to storage, I really have no idea what im looking for, only that I want things to be fast. But to be honest with you, I dont really know where I need the speed as far as where the speed comes into play when dealing with holding RAW photos that will be worked on in Photoshop that will be on an SSD. I definitely want to wait a bit before committing to this build, I know Ryzen is new and is starting to get some great feedback, I feel uncomfortable with new things that havent quite been smoothed out, which is where Intel just gives me that peace of mind. At the very least, waiting a bit and deciding on Ryzen, or possibly Intel corrects their pricing to compete. My concern is switching to Ryzen starts a whole new process of choosing parts, and with all the options I am overwhelmed trying to get it all right once.
  13. Thanks for the feedback, I didnt quote this originally but was hoping for a follow up. Deciding on a Corsair RM550x PSU, and WD Black HDD inside the computer. Any other thoughts or does this look like it completes the build well
  14. GPU upgrade will come at a later date , I have a generous budget of around $1500 but am trying for less if I can. Since I dont NEED the GPU upgrade at the moment it basically allows me to build a $2000 computer for $1500. So overall build looks good on all levels? with the decided 550w PSU 80+ Gold and WD Black HDD as a file storage drive.
