  1. DNA data storage landmark: Now it's 215 petabytes per gram or over 100 million movies http://flip.it/FMupUz 215 PB per gram? That would make Linus' new Petabyte project worth nothing. Linus' needs a whole warehouse of this stuff for 64k uncompressed video files now!
  2. I have a Pi, I am considering turning it into a RetroPi once my cousin help me set up a linux htpc that runs Boinc since I love to help out with Science. I don't have the resources to turn it into a portable retro gaming system though.
  3. 1. I have been looking into the GPD WIN and devices like it and I am wondering if I should get the GPD WIN or wait for another promising project called PGS by Portable Solutions? I want to play light games on the go like 2d platformers and such other than Pokemon all the time and I don't really like the other offerings of Nintendo... I know I could have just gone with a laptop, but it is too big, I want something portable, preferably less than 7 inch in screen size with Windows since I love pc gaming. 2. I got a cheap tablet (Teclast X80 Pro) and my phone and another old phone on my gaming desk and I have been wondering what app should I use as a perfect companion to my pc? I am using Roccat PowerGird on my S7 and Logitech ARX Control on the Teclast. This leaves me with the 4 inch iNO 3 on the ARX dock on my G910 doing nothing to help me monitor my pc or execute macros. I am currently using it as a background music player and to deliver game walkthrough advice without having alt tab out, but I feel it can serve as something. Thank you for your suggestions in advance!
  4. My father doesn't know how to copy and paste files, doesn't know how to setup the easy process of Android first time setup, accidentally factory reset his phone and doesn't know how to install apps from the google play store. The only thing he does know is watching youtube and writing a word document, after some assistance. That is from what I remember, there should be a lot more that I have forgotten about. Well, at least my parents thinks Elementary OS (a Linux OS) is easy to use cause I had it setup as a HTPC, lol.
  5. I have 2 gtx 1080 in sli. It doesn't use the 1st gpu and vram use is 99%. Everything is max.
  6. It is not me who is inexperience, my parents are. Confusing gui is bad since my father and mother has trouble transitioning to win 10/8.1 from win 7 even though they are pretty much alike except from the damn start menu in 8. My mother is avoiding upgrading her laptop simply because she doesn't even know that laptops now run win 10 and often say "I have no idea how to use it". She is needing more ram since her laptop doesn't allow for ram upgrades. Anyway, I digress, I have decided on using elementary is since I am comfortable using the terminal to install programs while at the same time it is kept graphically simple for my parents as a htpc. Should I consider 10 foot apps for browsing or just use chromium? There will be lots of video playback so I am not sure if a 10 foot optimised browser is going to cut it.
  7. So, I am building a mini itx computer to serve as owncloud server and as an entertainment htpc. I would like to ask what linux distro and/or desktop replacement should I use that allows setting up the server but is user friendly enough that a person can use the interface to easily open a programme. (My parents will be using it and my father only knows how to type and open programmes like Chrome. He doesn't know how to even copy and paste, that is how bad it is. I would go for Windows, but owncloud stopped updating the server software for windows.) I am looking at Ubuntu and using a desktop replacement, but I like Element OS because of the clean native interface but afraid that owncloud won't run.
  8. I see, I will stick with stock then, maybe buy a case fan. Thanks!
  9. So I may be building a mini-itx computer and the purposes I have for this computer is to serve as owncloud server + F@H and Boinc; so you might imaging things will get hot for both cpu and gpu. I want to know whether going with a small/stock air cooler or an aio liquid cooler is better. The case I will be using is the Fractal Design Core 500 and I have seen in a review by Techreport.com where they manage to squeeze an aio in there. The temps are encouraging too. I have never worked with anything liquid cooled before, so should I stick to air cooling here or try an aio? PS: cpu is an i7-7700 and the gpu cooler is not a blower type.
  10. I see scientific progress being made with F@H and Boinc projects so I don't know why you are against it. Also, won't an SSD wear out faster than an HDD in 24/7 use?
  11. I have been a LTT fan since he was still in NCIX, but never really participated in the community since he started the company until now. Anyway, I am just dipping my nose into private servers (not big racks of servers, but small personal storage servers, i.e NAS with outside network access). I am wondering what type of hardware would I need for a multi purpose OwnCloud server that does F@H, Boinc, streaming video from websites like Youtube and my country's own free Netflix-like service, an OwnCloud server for the family and Steam in-home streaming (or should I use Moonlight?) from my super high-end gaming rig (that is totally going to be outdated by this year end *sarcasm*). Right now I am doing only half of this from an old ASUS K43S laptop (specs in spoiler) and it gets very hot just from streaming live videos from a Chinese TV channel's website that my father likes to watch. I am planning to redo this project with new hardware and an Ubuntu distro of Linux (I have never used Linux until I got myself some Pi). I am planning to use the CPU power for Boinc projects and GPU for F@H. So far from what I gather in hardware froums, Nvidia GPUs has specialized H.264 encoding and decoding chips? So I guess game streaming from my gaming PC isn't going to be affected by GPU usage by F@H? I have no idea really, need some help with this one. Also might run a Minecraft server, not sure.
