so that failed 850 evo isn't dead after all. it's my laptop that's the problem.
the sata port is on a daughter board and i think it's slightly misalighed. i unscrewed the drive and unplugged it, then plugged it back in without screwing it in to test it and it worked. then i screwed the laptop back together and now it's stopped working again.
so i have to open it again and reseat that daughter board...

Daughterboards are the worst, man.
Especially when they decide they want a boyfriend.

it's quite the opposite. i'm a huge fan of daughterboards. in a normal laptop if the sata port breaks you can't use it ever again or you need a new logic board. i can just take 2 screws out and order a replacement sata I/O board for like €10...
