i'm crossing my fingers that Apple keeps supporting 2012 Mac's in macOS 10.15. not only would that allow me to keep my mid-2012 13" MBP but i can also get a 2012 iMac then.

i've been looking for a Mac desktop for a while. i actually got a 2012 Mac Mini, but that turned out to be a scam... but i've saved up a bit and i could buy a 2012 iMac if i wanted to. but i'm gonna wait until the new OS gets announced.

Or you could just use Linux....

Linux is not a macOS replacement....

Hell, Linux isn’t even a macOS supplement.

@DrMacintosh I wholeheartedly disagree. ElementaryOS is a good macOS replacement if you don't rely on macOS specific software.

And for others, Linux Mint or Ubuntu or some other distro would be great.

I mean to be fair, as long as you don't rely on Mac-specific software, you could get away with using just about any OS.

@Crunchy Dragon as a big advocate for Linux and with about 6 years of linux experience i can say with confidence @DrMacintosh is right. Linux is awesome if you know how to do everything, and on my (still broken ugh) pc with dual 6 core xeons and 48gb of ram it's amazing. i can just run a Windows VM with a GPU passed through for everything Linux does not support.

on my dual core laptop that's a different story. i can't just run VM's on that. so having native support for say Microsoft Office is really nice.

you might ask then 'why do you want an iMac' and the answer to that is all the macOS exclusive apps. i love Pages, iMovie is great and GarageBand is the only software i know how to use for recording music. also the integration macOS has with my iPhone is awesome.

@Crunchy Dragon Yeah although I suspect even if one didn't rely on macOS specific software some people wouldn't consider a linux distro to be a macOS replacement.

@firelighter487 you heard of LMMS? It's very similar to GarageBand, but I find it to be a little bit better.

@Crunchy Dragon i've tried it. and it's nowhere near as nice to use.

literally all i had to do to start recording music with garageband was install the drivers for my Yamaha PSR-423, install GarageBand, open an empty project and start playing. LMMS is nowhere near that seamless. especially for someone like me who just got out of a lengthy depression and who hasn't done anything with music for at least 5 years because of it... like it's really nice just to be able to goof around on my keyboard and not have to worry about setting stuff up.
