And I ordered a power cable for the new G5.

No idea why Apple would change it only to switch back later.

Screw you, Apple.

    What happened?

@DrMacintosh I have a new G5. It might become a personal project or I might resell it, assuming it works and the resale value is high enough(case is bent, can't fit a side panel on, no WLAN).

Apparently, the newer G5s that use the dual core PPC 970MP chips ship with a different power connector and cable, so I can't use the traditional one that I was able to on my old G5.

I had a newer PowerMac but just bought this: http://www.usedmac.com/products/922-5979-powermac-g5-front-panel-board

That's the front panel board you need to get the G5 cable working.

Just install that in the case and everything will work.

No no no, I needed the power cable.

My old G5, the one I'm modifying, will use an ATX power supply.

The new G5, the one this update is about, will run mostly stock. But Apple changed the power connector on the newer G5 PSUs, so I need to order a new power cable.

Wait, so you’re trying to use the stock PSU of a G5 to power an ATX System?

No, I'm using the stock PSU of a G5 to power a G5.

The late 2005 models(which I have one of now) use this connector:

The earlier models(which I'm modifying) have the standard power cable you use for just about anything.

I had to order a cable with the late-2005 model connector to try and test the late-2005 G5.

    OOHHHH

Yeah, idk why they changed the connector, but that thing did draw an absurd amount of power from the wall.

I haven't looked up the TDP yet, but I do know the G5 Quad pulled a ton of power.

It would be pretty cool if I could make it run Linux or even OSX, though. I doubt the resale value would be high enough to merit selling it, especially if the case won't allow for side panels.
