  1. Thank you so much. Internet searches simply revealed nothing for me- weird, I remembered scrapyard wars being so big.
  2. Guys, tell me I'm not crazy. Linustechtips used to have a series every year where they would compete with each other in teams to build PCs on a crazy tight budget, with a theme. Then they'd go against each other in benchmarks, and the appearance of their PCs was judged. What was this series called?! I can't remember for the life of me!
  3. Late update- Sorry I took so long. Replacing the graphics card was not a possible solution as none of my monitors are compatible with the old graphics card. However, when I plugged the hdmi into the motherboard rather than the graphics card, switching to integrated graphics, this fixed the issue. Clearly my graphics card died. I wish I found that out before I posted- sorry for wasting anyone's time.
  4. The state of things has gotten worse enough that it no longer stays on long enough to bring me to the windows emergency options. I've been trying to run safe mode. In the meantime, I replaced the RX 480 with an old gtx 750 ti. We are having some display compatibility issues but I will let you guys know if that worked. The buzzing noise is not from a component. It comes from my headphones, and only if the computer was playing sound at the time of crash. I.E., to make it simple, the noise replaces previous sound (video sound) in a crash. I can't get into windows to diagnose the ram anymore but my next step after replacing the graphics card (if it doesn't work) will be taking out one of the two ramsticks at a time to see if either is broken. Thanks for the help guys. I'll be back with more info tomorrow.
  5. Hello. Returning from a trip, I came to my computer and used it briefly before it suddenly hung (Sudden black screen, Buzzing noise). After attempting reboot, it continued to hang randomly, whether during log in or several minutes after boot up- but it always hangs, no matter what. It happens running any software; or running none at all- even in the middle of boot or right as I'm logging in. I can open bios and stay in as long as I like without crashing. Once running windows, however, the threat is back. I first reset the PC- first with the mode that keeps your personal files. When that didn't work; I reset it again but with the option that also deletes your personal files. This didn't work, but I tried again just to be sure, and it still didn't work (This was before downloading drivers). I have gotten into windows long enough to ensure all drivers are updated. I also used a separate computer and USB drive to update the bios. None of these fixed the issue. According to the bios system monitor no overheating is occurring. The CPU and motherboard both stay comfortably cool. Operating system- Windows 10 64 bit, Fully updated Processor- i5 6600k @3.2ghz with auto voltage Motherboard- MSI b150 gaming m3 Graphics- AMD XFX RX 480 (8gb) Ram- 16gb ripjaws @2133 with auto voltage Storage- Sandisk 480gb ssd Power supply- 800 watts, there has never been a power issue before The processor, motherboard and ram are all nearing 3 years old after heavy use. The Graphics card is just about 2 years old, and the storage about a year and a half. I would not be suprised if one of the older parts has finally died and needs replacing; but I have no clue which it could be. Thanks so much for reading and I appreciate any help or suggestions. I'm trying my best but I'm only 14 and even my dad is completely stumped. I need help.
  6. I went into AMD radeon settings, created a custom resolution, set timing standard to CVT -Reduced blanking, which allowed me to change framerate, then told it to make the refresh rate 144hz. Using https://www.testufo.com/refreshrate , I had it tell me exactly what my current display's refresh rate was. Result? 59.950. So, 60hz. I appreciate the help but I guess I really do need an Nvidia GPU, oh well.
  7. I don't plan on keeping my RX 480 for long. Buying a freesync monitor, it would be out of date and useless to me the MOMENT I upgrade to the GTX 2080 (when it comes out). I didn't make this thread to be ridiculed for my monitor choice when you guys don't even know the whole picture. Thank you glenwing for your actual response. I've gone into windows settings to check if there's a way to set the refresh rate but not only did I find nothing I don't think windows is the root of the problem. When I went into AMD settings it reads that the monitor only refreshes at 60hz. I don't see any way of fixing this other than buying an nvidia card, but that's okay since I was planning on doing so anyways. To be completely fair I had no way of knowing that the monitor would only run 60hz with an AMD card- I understand what GYSNC is. It helps sync the frames coming out of the PC with the frames displayed on the monitor, so that lower framerates appear smoother and have lower response times. From my perspective I just didn't see how that could possibly affect the maximum framerate of the display. Also, there are plenty of monitors that achieve 144hz+ without freesync or gsync, and it doesn't matter what card you have. How was I suppose to know that all monitors can't do that?
  8. I just got the s340 elite (limited purple edition, that's irrelevant but I wanted to flex). This case is very beautiful but it's not really big enough for a good custom loop. I think for any liquid cooling I DO pursue, I will wait until I can get a bigger case and do a full loop (With res, and probably cool the ram and mobo too). I want to go all out when I can afford it, not just skimp and waste my money because I can do it NOW. Thanks for all the replies though.
  9. Hello everyone. Recently, I bought a dell monitor, the S2716DG. It's a 1440p, 144hz g-sync display. I'm experiencing two major problems which have inhibited my experience. Firstly, every time I turn on the monitor after turning it off for the night, it acts as if its maximum resolution is 1024x768. When I go in the settings, it says the maximum resolution is 1440p but offers no way to change it- the only fix is rebooting it several times, or factory resetting it and rebooting once. This is a very strange problem and only happens when I turn the monitor off, so I've decided to just let it go to sleep instead. This shouldn't happen though! Secondly, it's not running at full 144hz. It says in settings that the maximum is 144hz, and when I go to refresh rate settings it says it's set to "fast" and not "normal", yet still it only displays at 60hz. I'm not a professional gamer so I can't really tell the difference by just looking at it, but that might be because I've never actually seen 144hz! Anyways, This might be because I'm using an AMD card with a GYSNC display, but I didn't realize that's how it worked. I am using the displayport connector, not HDMI. All drivers are up to date. HELP!
  10. Yea I've been thinking about waiting for the 2080, it'd be awesome if I can wait until the 2080 poseidon comes out because that's just one less thing to worry about, and also I don't care about the COST of the res I just don't want one.
  11. Hey guys. I have literally no experience with watercooling at all, however; in a few months I'm likely to buy the ASUS gtx 1080ti Poseidon graphics card, which combines the power of liquid and air cooling (It has a pre installed waterblock, but has fans too). Anyways, Building a full loop is super expensive and time consuming, I know that; between the pump and res and rad you're spending several hundred dollars. I was wondering if there's any way to make an AIO style loop, aka- loop with NO reservoir (I would carefully measure the loop to fill it properly without a reservoir) a loop with the pump built into the radiator Is this possible? I just want to cool the GPU, since I really really need a cpu/mobo upgrade anyways, and I can't afford to do it all at once. Thanks.
  12. As far as I can tell it's a really reasonable deal. I'm not used to euro prices but in terms of dollars that's actually the same price as all the parts put together. Maybe a $50 premium for building it. If you don't trust yourself to build a PC, definitely go for that. It's a good deal. 8600k- $300 MOBO- $200 Graphics card- ~$400 RAM- $150 Storage- $50 Case- ~$150 It adds up. Parts- ~$1350 Pc- (in dollars)- $1500 Worth it in my opinion. That's $150 ish premium, very reasonable.
  13. Done. Apparently when I asked if I COULD cancel my order they just went ahead and did it so I guess I don't really have a choice. I think I'll be happier in the long run anyways.
  14. Hello everyone! I'll get straight to the point. I bought/ordered the massdrop vast for $550, which was going against my earlier plans to buy a $500 27-inch QHD 144hz G-sync display. I figured ultrawide would be pretty cool to try, and that the lower refresh didn't really matter. In the next couple of weeks, some reviews came out which started to sway my opinion (Like linus'). But it was too late, I thought. Now, the monitor I originally wanted to buy is $350, $200 cheaper than the ultrawide I ordered. My question is- should I cancel the vast order and buy this other monitor, or stay? Pros of each monitor- Vast is ultrawide Dell is higher refresh and has G-sync (For my future 1080ti I'll get in around 2 months). WHAT DO I DO? I HAVE A VERY LIMITED TIME TO MAKE UP MY MIND AND I NEED HELP! This other monitor is on a black friday deal and I don't have much time!!!!!!! That $200 would be nice to have since I'm only 14 (income is much slower for me) but I'm still not sure!
