  1. I am curious what is "really tight budget" how much are we talking? Because I would seriously recommend putting off buying/using old server hardware for gaming unless you have no choice. I would save up and build something that is newer on the relative cheap.
  2. I was thinking power supply also when I read the OP's post. Either that or a overheating issue, could check to make sure your H/S and fan are properly mounted. Given the random nature of the reboots it could be either imo. But Power supply is top of the list for me as well.
  3. My System is updated as well whenever you get time to update it.
  4. Noctua makes some great heatsinks with almost silent fans.
  5. dont think that motherboad will work with the 2600. Needs to be updated, and i dont believe it has a update feature without a processor.

  7. Thinking either a 2600X ryzen build or a i5-8400 build
  8. Is this a pure gaming rig or do you plan to use it for other things?
  9. See My post above which mentions both of the items in the previous posts..
  10. Try using Windirstat, it shows you where all the files are on your drive are and how big they are.. it is possible if you have a large amount of ram you are losing some of the space on your drive due to the pagefile.sys and hiberfil.sys.. You can turn off hibernate and gain back valuable disk space. Run CMD as administrator and type powercfg -h off and it will gain you back roughly the amount of ram you have in disk space. If you know how you can move the pagefile to another drive preferably a larger drive or just reduce the file of the page file. That is probably were your missing SSD space is. Windirstat will show you this.. Link: https://windirstat.net/
  11. Honestly using the FX chip he already might be a better option. Graphics Transcoding is kind of weak on Plex, only allows two stream from hardware accelerated option instead of using a nice cpu and a small/low power GPU.
  12. I wouldn't use a laptop unless it is modern.. Old Laptops have slow processors and they are not built for transcoding. Your FX6300 would be better. You dont need a Graphics Card like that for a server. It uses alot of power, get a low power card just to be able to have a GUI. I used a Zotac GT710 1x pcie for all my server machines just to have video. Internet speed is great. FX6300 has a passmark score around 6300 at stock speeds. That should be able to handle at least 3 1080 transcoding streams and possibly some direct streams. If you need more streams you could invest in a 8000 series fx chip on the cheap from ebay. I run Windows 10 with Plex, file storage and other programs.

  14. Do you have a system already set up? if not what is your budget? How many streams do you anticipate will be sharing at the same time and what is your internet connection speeds?:
  15. First we need to know what OS you are running, second are all three drives the same size? You can do Storage Spaces in windows for a NAS, or if you do freenas you can do a HBA like some of the posters have suggested. You can do a raid card if that is something you want to do.. I have been using raid cards in my Windows PC for years and all these people saying you cant use without a back-plane are wrong. On top of that I have had little to no problems with my setup.. I have a Raid 6 with 28 drives, a Raid 5 with 3 drives and another raid 5 with 10 drives. All used in different manners one is a backup array. Most of the used raid cards on eBay are decent they last for awhile but run hot so you need to make sure you have enough fans to cool them down. It depends on what you intend to run on your NAS which will depend on what hardware or software you want to use. They have software raid options on the market as well.

  17. My point is setting up Tiering with SSD's in Windows 10 can not be done through the GUI, and not only that you have to buy two ssd's which even at the cheapest your looking at 40-50 per (80-100$) instead of buying a 50-70$ used raid card without having to use SSD's for tiering.
  18. Storage spaces is god awful slow, and tiering has to be setup manually on Win10. Where as server 2012/2016 is can be setup in the GUI. You also have to have two SSD's for Tiering. A cheap raid card lsi 9260-4i (30-40 usd on ebay) is decent and usable without SSD tiering.
  19. Good luck, there are plenty of resources on how to setup a homeserver/lab and how to configure Freenas/Unraid. Found a lot of great tutorials on youtube for some of these things. Good choice on your hard drives NAS drives are excellent and I am a Fan of WD.
  20. Yes it is. Both Freenas and Unraid are good choices for what you are planning to do.
  21. Freenas is designed for combining drives and getting decent performance it is widely used by a lot of people for homeservers. About the slowness of the drives when I mean slow I mean very slow. If you use software raid 5/6 on windows your reads will be decent but writes will be 10-15 maybe 30 mbs a sec. I am not real good with options on ubuntu as far as raid config goes. Freenas may be a better option or Unraid where you can set up VM's.
  22. If you want two drives for redundancy raid 6 is a option it offers 2 drive redundancy but again doing this with out a raid card or freenas is extremely slow and a bad idea. If you need it to be in Windows the only option you have is to buy a raid card or deal with the extremely slow storage spaces option. They have alot of used ones on ebay. LSI makes some that support over 2TB Drives and support raid 5/6 that are reasonably priced.
  23. Both of these videos explain what you need to know about raid.. Ideally with 4 drives you can either do a Raid 10 or Raid 5 or RaidZ1 if you use Freenas. Doing Raid 5 without a Raid card is going to be very slow whereas raid 10 maybe a better option. You need to do research on these terms and ideas before jumping into this.
  24. Just Curious your going to use 4 drives in a Raid 1?? You will only get 4TB worth of usable space. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811219024 Has 8 Bays is compadible with ATX and redundant Power supply.
