  1. Hello, I have a Sony Camcorder from the old days and bunch of miniDV tapes. What is the best way to convert them to a reasonable files? capturing a DV file with linux program called "kino" produces ~12GB file from one cassette. I would be OK keeping them that big if I would have just a few cassettes, but I have over 50. So that's over 600GB of 720x576 at 25 frames does not seam reasonable thing to do. So what codec I should use with the least quality lost and keeping my hard drives happy? Thank you. PS. You can admire my ghetto capturing station. iMac G5 with 1.8GHz single core, 1.5GB DDR ram capturing from one camera. Q6600 @ 3.0GHz , 8GB DDRII, capturing from another camera. Mac connected to Q6600 via gigabit cable to send DV files. Idea is to keep all DVs in Q6600 computer and send only converted files to NAS. That's what you get for buying only new laptops with no firewire, you have to use old computers.
  2. I humidity is less than 30% so I think I should be OK, right?
  3. Once it's working, temperature is in the range... so it should be OK.
  4. It represents that "it's alive" one LED can't and does not represent level. Dynamic mics are even worse in distance. For larger distances you could use shotgun type mic or something with super-cardiod pattern. Just keep it close and you will be good to go.
  5. Well, i would like to mention that where I live temperature could go from -30C to +30C over the year.
  6. I am running my server in a loft. House is isolated not from the roof, but from the floors of the loft, so loft pretty much gets as cold as the outside. What would be dangerous temperatures? Yes, I am aware how to make a screenshot, just did not wanted to move a thing and get the lowest idle temps I could. As you can see, I am running Q6600 at 3GHz (FSB to 1333) with no other options changed. BTW, it's really interesting that CPU temperatures pretty much matches ambient temperature with no load. It's -3C. Also it's been running for two days with no problems whatsoever.

    dac question

Well, kind of. Another option would be a sound card with monitoring and a dac. So you would plug one devices output to the dac, dac to the sound card's inputs. Another device with USB - to soundcard. In some cards you can mix digital (USB) and the analog (inputs) to the output.

    dac question

You can't plug digital inputs to a mixer.
  9. Aivaras

    dac question

OK, in that case you would need multiple DACs and an mixer. Are you sure that you two digital inputs at once?
  10. Yeah, you are right. No nice guest additions in old systems. I found this link: https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?t=9918
  11. Green does not indicate "good" it indicates that there is a signal and it's not peeking (not going to red.). Download any application for recording. And then checkout levels. Maybe you have something working in windows settings side? With condenser mics your distance from mic should not be ~30cm, but more like 3-5cm. That could be the main issue. Also mind a cardiod pattern of the mic.
  12. Check out virtualbox windows menubar, there should be an option "install guest additions"
  13. Aivaras

    dac question

I don't know any amps that would let mix inputs.

    dac question

DACs with multiple inputs have a "switch" of what input you would like to use. As Dackzy mentioned, you need a mixer. Idea is that you would plug all your sources to the mixer and from the mixer you would output to speakers or headphones. What kind of sources you would like to connect?
