  1. What device are you using? You might be able to fix it by adjusting the EQ. I use a windows PC for watching stuff and use the Loudness Equalization feature on the playback properties which does limit the highest volume I can get out of my speakers, but it levels out a bad audio mix.
  2. IIRC spotify injects ads on the serverside.
  3. Their intended use is for long term storage of data that is never changed. Sure, if they have 6 months to wait around. Wipe and redump is far faster Noted. That's horrifying. I suppose everyone just jumped to SSDs HDD should report temp. Max temp rec is 50C so you're pretty safe
  4. If you have write access to that file, you could just edit it. It might update every boot/logon/hour but you can just have a script that checks it every minute and updates it
  5. Fixing a consumer grade product with an electrical motor almost always means straight up replacing it. I always advise going with Noctua PWM redux fans because they are not too expensive and, in my experience, flat out refuse to die. I am certain there are cheaper ones that have similar lifespan, but at this point in my life I don't have time to hunt them down and if I pay an extra few bucks for a fan, it's worth it for the time saved
  6. the world is still built on x86. Love it or hate it it's not going anywhere any time soon Windows is just now starting to prep for an ARM/RISC transition
  7. What's the make and model? If it *is* SMR, I'd recommend replacing it. HDDs are not expensive and there is no reason to use an SMR for merely 2TB and this is very concerning. What's the SMART say about TeraBytes Written? My guess would be that it's >2TB and thus is basically cornered If replacing the drive isn't in the cards, I'd recommend just dumping the data somewhere, format the drive, run a TRIM on it, then dump the data back onto it. It's the fastest way to defrag an SMR drive. https://superuser.com/questions/1550947/is-there-a-way-to-optimise-an-smr-hard-drive PS, why did we ever let HDD manufacturers sell SMR drives to consumers?
  8. Almost certainly a dying fan. Those fans tend to gum up after a few years
  9. You're probably fine. I'd just try a long print and see if it runs into problems. If things are overheating, then you can just toss a case fan in
  10. Welcome to the forums! "Reliable Wireless Display" is an oxymoron. ALL of them have dropouts and are a nightmare to troubleshoot. Would it be possible to just slap smart plugs on these and have them toggle power off and on every X hours?
  11. If customer support won't RMA it, and 40$ to get a replacement is out of the budget, I'd highly recommend disassembling it and cleaning with picks and maybe Electrical Contact Cleaner (**not** for eyes). That would also allow you to eyeball the actual rotary encoder they're using which you could then look up on Digikey or whatever and then you can use your PCB rework station to replace it.
  12. As for bypassing work restrictions? Mmmmm, that's *really* close to breaking forum rules, but if you WFH, you should be able to point your router at a pi-hole. If you're at work? You'd either have to VPN or hotspot->VPN which likely wouldn't work well
  13. Have you tried MyNoise? I've been supporting them for nearly a decade https://mynoise.net/NoiseMachines/whiteNoiseGenerator.php
  14. because Also, a USB DAC allows OP to switch without extra button presses Further, in your scenario, OP is buying not one but two extra devices, and more specialized devices at that (which pushes up the cost/quality ratio), plus having to deal with an entire phantom screen. All that as opposed to just buying a single device run of the mill device which will do everything they need Fragglerock but I hate AVRs.... My whole home audio system now consists of a pair of 6 zone dumb stereo amps and that's it. They are daisy chained and take the output from a usb DAC (I had to use that so I would stop hearing the HTPC's CPU/GPU think through the speakers). So nice, so smooth, so easy
  15. Yeah, at this point it's a bit of mess around and find out. Though, before doing that, DO make a backup of your registry so if something goes sideways you can revert it all
  16. Though, that sounds like dying RAM. RAM's cheap right now, it wouldn't hurt to try a new kit. And come to think of it, most RAM comes with lifetime warranty. You could ask about an RMA
  17. Also, if you press Windows+Shift+S it will bring up snipping tool which will let you take a screenshot which is then put in your clipboard.
  18. A "powervirus" is not a virus virus. It is just when the computer notices that there is something using a LOT of power, it will try to throttle it back. You are safe, there is nothing wrong.
  19. Welcome to the forums! First, very important question What is you budget? My understanding is that instead of a KVM you currently have a USB-only switch for your peripherals and use the monitor's various inputs for video, is that correct? If so, do you need to be able to output audio from one device while using a different one? If you just want the active computer to be outputting audio, you can probably grab a mediocre USB 5.1+ DAC with SDPIF out as well as a headphone jack. The trick is to find one that has drivers for Windows, Mac *and* linux. This one only natively supports Windows, but there are a ton out there https://www.amazon.com/StarTech-com-7-1-USB-Sound-Card/dp/B002LM0U2S
