Phenom II x4 955 BE and an MSI AM3+ motherboard for $5? Ok. Daddy's got a new test bench.

always with the space heater jokes. why? older parts are less energy efficient. so what?

    I was just kidding @firelighter487

My a8-6410 runs 60 degrees on idle, so I should be allowed to make these jokes

i'm pretty much the king of space heater components (my workstation has dual X5650's and a 780Ti, and my gaming system has a GTX 690 in it) and basically all of them run ok at idle, and don't get insanely hot under load.

    Isn't the -6410 a laptop CPU?

It's a shitty 760 chipset board, so yes, if I'm not careful, it could easily become a space heater.

@aisle9 yep. But it gets pretty hot for a laptop apu

Nah, it's an MSI board and I'm not overclocking anything, so it'll be fine. Just ran it through AIDA64 for an hour and the VRMs (no heatsinks) peaked at 84C, well within the safe zone. Considering that I'll probably never run AIDA64 on this board again, I'm ok with that result. It's a test bench, not a low-spec gamer.

@LukeSavenije the real question is why get an amd apu laptop that isn't ryzen?

@LukeSavenije I know, my wife had one for a while in a 17" Toshiba with a 768p screen and the thing was great at keeping your junk warm if you set it on your lap in the winter. I'd hate to imagine how bad that APU must have been in a 15" machine, and pray to God they had enough sense not to put it in anything smaller.

Well, my 2330m in my acer does a better job. Still busy with some replacing, but it should be fine. I actually got if for free from a company, and paid 488 euros for the spaceheater laptop. My little brother uses it as a school laptop, and if I didn't told him, he wouldn't even notice it
