I just spent about an hour opening up my laptop trying to troubleshoot my touchpad not working and it turns out it was somehow disabled in the bios.

I would try formatting it then, sounds like some filesystem level corruption. Same thing happened to me when I didnt safely remove my backup hdd, all my files were gone and it showed as readonly. I tried every adapter combination, and ended up using DBAN on it and to this day it works.

did you backup? And how old is it? I would try a full wipe(not quick format) to make sure its not corruption on the filesystem.
