  1. I was thinking of running a Windows Server in a VM (not all the time) for learning and training. Would the Pentium G4560 be able to cope with running VirtualBox on Ubuntu?
  2. I thought about the SOCs, they certainly have an appeal. Something like the https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157475 But I plan on perhaps using this as a HTPC, Server, Streaming device, etc. and wanted it to last for a long while w/o feeling too sluggish. I've had bad luck with RAM that wasn't binned together. So I always try to buy RAM as a package to avoid any issues. So this is my updated list. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/FjK6bj Swapping out the i3 for the Pentium G4560 leaves me room for a better boot drive. So I thought about swapping out the ADATA for a Samsung M.2 drive

  4. My old home server died recently and i'm looking to build a new one. Last one ran for 7 years and I'm hoping to get as many years from the new one. mITX form factor with @ least 4 HDD. Uses: Kodi server, host small website, and pc backups. Current thought is running Ubuntu wit the three HDD in a JBOD with zfs file system for redundancy. My question is, does anyone see a problem with my current thought for the build. Anything I'm missing, or thats overkill? This is my PC so far: PCPartPicker part list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/dh2vtJ CPU: Intel - Core i3-7100 3.9GHz Dual-Core Processor CPU Cooler: Noctua - NH-L9i 33.8 CFM CPU Cooler Motherboard: ASRock - H270M-ITX/ac Mini ITX LGA1151 Motherboard Memory: Crucial - 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4-2133 Memory Storage: ADATA - Ultimate SU800 128GB 2.5" Solid State Drive Storage: Western Digital - Red 2TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive (x3) Case: Fractal Design - Node 304 Mini ITX Tower Case Power Supply: Corsair - CXM 450W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply Total: $536.75 Thanks
  5. Awesome Idea, love the portability of the device, and you don't have to settle for a pico projector. But at $1400 I'd rather put that money to my mortgage
  6. Logitech K400r. I"m ready to ditch membrane keyboards forever
  7. What would be a good Static Pressure fan? Something like these Corsair ones?
  8. I was hoping to upgrade the PSU later when I got some more money... I've experienced first hand what a low-end PSU can do to a system's stability. Would something like the Corsair CSM @ $60 be worth it? The only reason I went with the ASRock board over something like the ASUS H81M-K was I wanted this to have dual NICs for teaming so I could get maximum throughput on large file transfers (like when backup up Blu-ray and the like). Would it be cheaper to just buy a PCI NIC like this Intel one?
  9. I'm looking into building a small server for the home to replace my old WHSv1 that's running Windows Server 2003. I'm primarily going to use it for media storage, but may install the LAMP stack on it (Ubuntu Sever maybe?) and play around with web services too. At $820.58 this is my current build: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/fbkXTW. its highlights are an Intel Xeon E3-1220 V3, ASRock Z97 EXTREME6, and 3 Western Digital Reds for RAID 5. I'm sure its a little overkill, but I want it to last and have fast transfer speeds. My current mini Server running an Atom CPU is very processor bound in nearly every task I do. So.... What do people think? Any easy place to cut corners?
  10. I want to be able to stream games to the living room in silence.
