  1. in my experience, most external drives are a standard sata drive installed into an enclosure. I would disassemble the enclosures, remove the internal drive, and test the drive separately. Odds are, the drive is dead. If that is the case, repair wouldnt be an option as HDDs are incredibly delicate on the inside, and near impossible to repair mechanical faults. You can replace the hard drives inside and keep the enclosure though, which i would suggest doing.
  2. I believe you are getting the z270a and the z170a confused. The z270 Prime a ( as linked below) will work the i7 7700k and to my knowledge has no compatibility issue (it shouldn't, as CPU and RAM compatibility is determined by the chipset). https://pcpartpicker.com/product/7VZ2FT/asus-prime-z270-a-atx-lga1151-motherboard-prime-z270-a
  3. Asus Prime z270a is a nice board got a color scheme in mind? heres a list that matches your criteria - https://pcpartpicker.com/products/motherboard/#m=8,18,27&f=2&c=119&X=0,17500
  4. GPU is supported by CPU pcie Lanes, it should work fine to add in a NIC. Intel is such a troll, the one page in the spec document of the Q9400 that contains PCIe info is missing Data Sheet
  5. ^^^^ this 450-550 watts should be fine, something like the corsair cx450m (grey) should work.
  6. You didn't charge the store for that? The motherboard should definitely be replaced if t was exposed to fire damage, and of a tech was responsible Intel for the fire, the store should have covered the cost of subsequent repairs (i.e. New motherboard).
  7. I agree that kodi.tv is a good option. It also futures native remote control support as well, you should actually be able to control it with an xbox controller. if your looking for a more traditional remote, something like this should work - LINK You should also be able to control it from your phone using the web interface
  8. Have you tried testing another GPU? 4x may not be enough bandwidth for a GPU which could be causing the black screens. You may want to try RMAing your mobo.
  9. Linus has said repeatedly that the website is extremely outdated and in need of maintenance. I'm sure there are countless other problems if you looked hard enough.
  10. Its worth a try I suppose, but there are many factors that can contribute to a black screen. The first troubleshooting step should be to determine if a particular hardware component is causing it, namely the GPU. I suggest disconnecting the dGPU entirely and seeing if the issue persists before proceeding. It could also be issues with drivers or the applications themselves.
  11. Correct, but I believe the OP was asking due to troubleshooting rather than improving performance. Unless OP is on a laptop (which he doesn't seem to be), only one graphics device can be used at once, so while disabling hardware acceleration may improve performance, it won't be useful for troubleshooting.
  12. there is no way to simultaneously use integrated and dedicated graphics. In other words, you cannot have your 470 plugged in and use integrated graphics to run desktop applications. If you are trying to troubleshoot an issue, disconnect the 470 entirely. Turning hardware acceleration off as @Droidbot suggested will simply use less system resources; output will still be processed by the rx470.
  13. As I said both z170 and z270 boards support ALL frequencies of ddr4 through XMP. I suggest getting a z170 board, something like the Asus z170a should work great.
  14. Both z170 and z270 supports XMP, so you can get any ddr4 ram. Do you plan on overclocking the CPU?
  15. I don't know what voltage or amperage the strip needs, but if it's something like a 400mA 12v you could just splice the cables into the psu.
  16. That is cheating, many games will ban for it.
  17. http://pcpartpicker.com/product/PmyFf7/acer-monitor-umfg6aab01 144hz, matches your other requirements as well. Edit - wrong currency
  18. It should be fine then.
  19. There really isn't a difference, though USB is faster. I have occasionally had issues installing linux/ freeNAS from USB that were fixed when using a DVD drive, but USB drives are almost always better.
  20. Fair enough. Ubuntu has a reputation of being universally compatible, and ultimately it is free and easy to install, so I just assume it works until prooven otherwise.
