Best Linux Distro?
steezemageeze replied to ConnorN's topic in Linux, macOS and Everything Not-Windows
I hate this question (even though it is a reasonable one for a newbie), because it really has no good answer, because everybody learns differently, and everybody has different needs. In general, I'd say that beginners should start out on Ubuntu, one of Ubuntu's flavors, or Linux Mint. Once you've used it for a while and feel comfortable, distro-hop to something a little more advanced like Debian, Manjaro/Antergos, or Fedora. Where you go from there is your choice.- 12 replies

Antergos or Fedora
steezemageeze replied to XDroidie626's topic in Linux, macOS and Everything Not-Windows
Haven't dealt with an update on Fedora yet (Used 23 for a while, distro hopped, then installed 24) but I version upgrades almost never go super smoothly. I'll be interested to see how 24-25 goes for me now. I also agree with you on that Fedora's RHEL roots lends itself to stability, same goes for OpenSUSE & SUSE Enterprise -
Minimum specs for Chrome OS
steezemageeze replied to manlykeweaver465's topic in Linux, macOS and Everything Not-Windows
Here's a rough approximation by CloudReady, a Chromium OS distro. Not sure how accurate/official these specs are though -
If you count OCing my 860K from 3.7 to 4.0GHz, then yes. I also think I might've slightly OC'd my 750Ti, but I'm not entirely sure I remembered to save/apply it.

Antergos or Fedora
steezemageeze replied to XDroidie626's topic in Linux, macOS and Everything Not-Windows
I've used both, and I prefer Fedora by miles. Antergos is (in my opinion) a sloppy, unpolished distro, and I'm not a fan. If you want to use Arch, download Arch itself, ArchBang, or Manjaro. Fedora on the other hand, is extremely stable, and has the added bonus of being very up to date (compared to Debian or something). I also really recommend OpenSUSE, for the same reasons as Fedora -
My school has a combination of shitty Core2 machines running Vista and nice i5 machines running W7. My Votech school has half-decent Core2 machines (in the programming room at least. We also just got some i5 machines, but they haven't set them up yet) some iMacs (digital media & digital art), and in the "general lab" downstairs, Pentium 4 machines (yikes)

Well my rig is just unbalanced in about every way possible. My Athlon 860K is weak, and there's nothing I can do about it as it's (I think) the best CPU on that socket, besides overclock it more, which I don't have the cooling to do. My 750 Ti isn't actually that bad, but if I upgrade to anything better than it, I won't perform well because of the CPU bottleneck. My two mechanical drives also don't help. I made poor choices to cut costs when I built this thing...

What do you use Linux for?
steezemageeze replied to ParableReach's topic in Linux, macOS and Everything Not-Windows
Just about everything except gaming (14/50 of my Steam games support Linux -_-). Desktop use, learning programming (teaching myself w/ some help from my dad), learning Linux in general, whatever. I just enjoy using it because it's a fresh break from Windows. -
Apricity OS or elementaryOS
steezemageeze replied to CaptainEssa97's topic in Linux, macOS and Everything Not-Windows
Hey look, my guide! Thanks for linking it, I'm glad to see it's still helping people. I haven't used Apricity OS, but as a beginner you're definitely better off with Elementary, so, good choice! Apricity is based on Arch, which can be unstable and more difficult to use, while Elementary is based off Ubuntu, which is leagues more user-friendly. Good luck! -
Best Linux distro for learning Linux
steezemageeze replied to Mr Robot's topic in Linux, macOS and Everything Not-Windows
I haven't used it so I can't say for sure, but I'm pretty sure that's a no. Kali really just shouldn't be used as a desktop installation. -
Best Linux distro for learning Linux
steezemageeze replied to Mr Robot's topic in Linux, macOS and Everything Not-Windows
Yes, it is only really made for penetration testing. Everything runs in root, which can be dangerous if you don't know what you're doing. Don't even try it unless you really know what you're doing. It's installation is very advanced -
Best Linux distro for learning Linux
steezemageeze replied to Mr Robot's topic in Linux, macOS and Everything Not-Windows
Ubuntu (or it's spins) or Linux Mint, they're definitively the most noob-friendly. Do NOT use Kali, it isn't meant for desktop use in the first place, especially for someone learning. -
Fedora and Manjaro Linux
steezemageeze replied to a topic in Linux, macOS and Everything Not-Windows
Yeah, absolutely. I've used and gamed on both with no problems. Manjaro might be a little more beginner friendly than Fedora, but if you want to go with Fedora I suggest trying Korora -
Fedora and Manjaro Linux
steezemageeze replied to a topic in Linux, macOS and Everything Not-Windows
Both are fine for day to day use. I use Manjaro on my desktop and many people use Fedora as their main OS. I recommend Fedora for stability, but both are great distros. -
Best Distro of Linux
steezemageeze replied to PokeCatz's topic in Linux, macOS and Everything Not-Windows
Glad to hear it. I don't have much (read: any) experience with Lubuntu so I wasn't sure how it'd fare. -
I got Manjaro and Kubuntu as my top results, which is kinda funny because I use Manjaro on my PC and Xubuntu on my laptop. Nice find, @thor77 that was interesting!

I'm thinking it's some power setting that I missed somewhere, but I've already been through all the possibilities. I'm going to be reinstalling soon when I get an SSD, so I'm interested to see if it persists or not.

My PC will only hibernate from Linux. If I try to hibernate in Windows, it starts back up 5 mins later, but into Linux because it is the default OS You know how I said Linux is my main OS? I can't even change that if I wanted to. The drive that contains Windows doesn't show up in the BIOS (but it does show up in the F12 boot selection screen) Windows likes to delete my PS/2 drivers about once a week (which doesn't matter anymore because the PS/2 port broke) My front panel USB likes to disconnect itself once in a while Using the touchpad on my laptop would activate Cortana all the time (long story short, it doesn't run WIndows anymore)

My school goes to ridiculous lengths like this as well. If I want to sign into my school account from home, I have to sign into their filter, and even worse, if I want to get my school email on my phone, I get this: which screams all sorts of NO to me. My school is a real wreck right now tbh.

Best Distro of Linux
steezemageeze replied to PokeCatz's topic in Linux, macOS and Everything Not-Windows
Out of those 3, Lubuntu is probably your best bet, although that is a pretty weak system. Check out BunsenLabs Linux, I've found that it runs very well on older systems. https://www.bunsenlabs.org/ -
Let's make a "What's on My Tech" thread
steezemageeze replied to Chaos_Sorcerer's topic in General Discussion
There's an official client for Ubuntu/Debian (via PPA), and there are packages in the AUR and (I believe) RPMFusion repos where people have converted the official .deb to .rpm or AUR installers. The only distro I haven't been able to get it on is OpenSUSE, although there are some hacky ways to make it work. -

1- Moto Droid Turbo- I use Nova Launcher Pro and the Timely Clock widget, plus a bunch of social media apps. Nothing really special until Moto/VZW gives us real root/bootloader access 2- My dad's old iPad 2- Don't use it much, mostly just for Spotify listening and some games 3- Acer Extensa 5230e (upgraded CPU, RAM, & SSD)- Running Xubuntu 16.04 at the moment but that's always subject to change. This is my current dock App finder, Geany, Mousepad, Thunar, Thunderbird, Chrome, Corebird, Steam, Spotify, Firefox, Rhythmbox, Xfce4Terminal, Gnome Software Center, Settings, Show Desktop (Chromium was just open for schoolwork). Sometimes I play Hotline Miami on here, but it's about the only game in my library that'd run on here. Thing is crazy fast for it's age (9 years btw), boots in 12 seconds 4- Specs are in my sig-. My desktop is mostly boring, I haven't messed w/ Rainmeter or anything. I have ~50 games on here, stuff like Bioshock, The Elder Scrolls, Hitman, Fallout, Just Cause. Taskbar is pretty much default except for Spotify, Steam, Atom Editor, and Fallout 4. Also, dualbooted with Manjaro Cinnamon edition, but it doesn't see as much use as I'd like (game support just isn't there) 5- I wish... 6- Monitor: HP Pavilion 23cw, 1080p. It's not the best monitor ever, but it looks very nice so I went with it. Mouse: Logi G402. It fit my budget, and my hand, and hasn't let me down. Keyboard: CM Storm Quickfire Rapid, MX Blue switch. All I have to say is, I'm in love. Headphones: Not even worth mentioning. Skullcandy Hesh 2.0, haven't gotten around to upgrading them. Mic: No mic -
I've been away from the forums for a while because I've been soaking up all of my time playing Fallout 4 (got it in the summer sale and haven't stopped playing since ). Thought I'd drop a couple (low res unfortunately) of my favorite screenshots so far. My Main SS- Badass Railroad Heavy My Secondary SS- BoS Sentinel who doesn't take shit from anybody I wish I had a better picture of her but the damn game keeps crashing when I load her save SS and Hancock (not pictured: Dogmeat) being badass The Crew The Crew in the RR HQ this screenshot is brought to you in part by "tfc 1" and "tm" Nobody won that day... All of my Power Armor helmets turned invisible??? re-starting the game fixed this but it was weird as hell Reasons why normal people shouldn't have to use the command line These random teddy bears kill me Hope you all are enjoying the game as much as I am!
