  1. So I built my new PC. I ended up naming it Dogmeat because if it ever screws up I can shout, "Damnit dogmeat". So whats in it? First of all I used a Corsair 780T (White edition because the damn yellow one is out of production). I then decided to plop an Asus Z10PE-D8 WS into it. I know PC Partpicker says that this case and mobo are not compatible. But they were wrong. I then said fuck it and put two Intel Xeon E5-2630. But then I was like OMG I need RAM. What do I do? So I went and plunked 64 GB of Kingston DDR4 ram in quad channel. The last piece of computing hardware I got was my GPU which I chose a EVGA 980-Ti hybrid cooled GPU. Finally, I grabbed some coolers (Corsair H80I) to cool each CPU, a Corsair 1200 W PSU and for storage I loaded a 3TB Nas, a 4TB NAS and a Samsung 256Gb 850 Pro SSD. Was it worth it? YES. Will I need an upgrade any time soon? NONONONONONO!!! IF you were too lazy to read my monolog of stats and you want to just read a list here it is. Case: Corsair 780T Mobo: Asus Z10PE-D8 WS CPU: two Intel Xeon E5-2630 RAM: 64 GB of Kingston DDR4 ram in quad channel. GPU: EVGA 980-Ti hybrid cooled PSU: Corsair 1200 W Coolers: Corsair H80I's Storage: 3TB Nas, a 4TB NAS and a Samsung 256Gb 850 Pro SSD I love Dogmeat. I hope you like him too.
  2. Oh I just wanted to talk about whatever. Its all interesting to me. I work as a crop modeler for CRCS and specialize in Durum Wheat production. But I find all of it interesting.
  3. I mean I do game as well. But I have a job and I love my job and I love doing it well. So I want to make sure that I have the hardware and configuration to do the excessive computing that I need to do. Its no attack to those who game hard core but I just hope some people realize that computers literally mean to compute and that means working. They were not created to game. Gaming was a bi-product of computer engineering. But oh well I will be unpopular opinion puffin who says that we should take a look at rigs designed for computing power and data management not necessarily GPU performance.
  4. Just curious what kind of stuff people are doing. Do you do it as a hobby? Work?
  5. Hey, so this is a super nerdy group of people. Does anyone here do computer crop or environmental modeling on there pc's? Anyone want to learn more or talk about CPU power in modeling?
  6. Actually I do know what a workstation is cause I own one with 2 xeon processors and a Asus Z10PE-D16 motherboard. I mean I get it that most people do not need that kind of stuff. I guess I made a huge mistake with the way this post went. What I was getting at is building high end computers for people who are building computers for high computational work and scientific style research. Or maybe stuff for people who are into like excessive computing for economics or market research. I mean I get what people are saying but a huge number of the videos (I would say like 80-90% ) are builds that satisfy the needs of gamers not really workers or researchers like me.
  7. Yo bro I mean I get your point there are alot of videos that could work as what I am trying to describe. But can we at least agree that there are significantly fewer videos of workstation builds than gaming rigs? Also some of the videos are out of date for new hardware.
  8. Those are not. You are correct but none of these are centered around the "average" joe who likes to take his work home with him and would like a workstation that can perform like his office computer
  9. Oh come on that's not what I mean... You know what I am talking about. I am talking about videos oriented around software like ESRI's ArcMap, STELLA, and conceptual work that is more CPU heavy and involves personalized (and by personalized I mean non ridiculous) build guides. There are plenty of videos like his gift guides and those are all centered around buying for your gamer. There are videos that you can pull parts of but I mean a start to finish build guide for workstations.
  10. I absolutely love LMG and I have watched way to many build logs and videos. But @Linus! Why do you only do builds that are centered around the GPU? I would love to see some builds that compare workstation style rigs. Ya know creative RAID set ups and some number crunching. I will always be a fan but man I am a worker and not so much a hardcore gamer. I would like to see a build like, "Workstation builds that kick ass for under $1,000 !". Maybe I am alone in this. If I am then please disregard. Does anyone else share my enthusiasm for some badass work rigs? Ya know stuff that makes accountants and scientists cream their pants?
  11. I also enjoyed unboxings. My number one thing I would like to see is a build that does not focus on gaming and graphics. I would like to see more workstation builds.
  12. Basically, I work for the University of North Dakota trying to research into climate change and agriculture and my Seagate Boot SSD has died. It is great sadness, such awful, much cry. A new SSD would put my back on track to graduate, save my research, and hopefully save the world some day.
