I still recommend the 1080 if it's in your budget. I do NOT recommend the stock cooler, wait for aftermarket coolers.
Like Bhav mentioned, the stock cooler can't keep the 1080 cool enough.
 
If you can't afford the 1080 for any reason, the 980 ti is still an excellent card. There are going to be used 980 ti's selling for a lot less than usual after the 1080 launches at the end of this month

I'd wait for the AIB GTX1080's to release, the current GTX1080FE is a joke of a card, not even worth half its price. It gets way too warm, downclocks within a few minutes and will be as loud as a Boeing.
 
Wait and see if the aftermarket/custom designs are better and actually worth the cash. Don't let the insane pascal hype fool you yet.

Only time will tell, but usually those two brands make good cards. 
 
Hopefully they hey can sort out the cooling and the lacking power delivery the 1080FE suffers from. Again, don't fall for the hype yet. Wait and see if things turn out better than they currently are. The Founders Edition looks nice on graphs but with a little more research you'll notice that's it's very very mediocre for its price.
