  1. depends to the laptop. Some laptops like mine have the igpu totally disabled and disconnected( the screen has no way of getting any signal from it) so mine will not work with an empty MXM. But a lot of other laptops still use the igpu so they can work even with an empty MXM (its like not having a gpu in a desktop but you just have to make sure the monitor is connected to the right device). For the swap-able gpu/hdd/optical drive idea the problem is the connector. GPUs and hdds use different communication protocols and would require a new connector to allow the different signals. Then there is the problem of the protocols themselves. PCIE and sata do not support hot swapping meaning that a shutdown is required to swap them. So in order to do this, a new protocol is needed along with a new connector which will be expensive to develop and get approved then take years to be adopted by the manufacturers. It is a good idea and would help laptop customization but its not possible right now.
  2. First off, I would like to say best of luck to you guys. I do feel like this is going towards a No compromise thin/light gaming laptop which unfortunately is going to have quite a bit of compromise just from the form factor alone. There really isn't an effective cooling solution at such small package. But hopefully you guys can prove that wrong. Still that isn't really the direction I consider No-compromise. If you look into any clevo communities you'll quickly find out pure performance and control (no limitations) is most important. Form factor and battery life are nice additions. One thing you can be sure is that many of us are waiting for an x99 or its successor chipset in a chassis that can manage the heat of a multicore chip and dgpu with some headroom. But I understand this is a much smaller niche market. It would still be very interesting to see a competitor to the Asus ROGs, Acer predator, Dellienware, etc. that is only 17mm.
  3. Might want to search up briefcase builds. I probably the closest thing without being a laptop.
  4. thats just what they call the option for being able to choose between dedicated graphics or hybrid/optimus. Don't actually know what it stands for. Like what pendragon said, it'll allows you to choose dedicated gpu only for better performance and gsync but at the cost of battery life in general, or use optimus for better battery life. Its just you'll need to reboot when switching between the two.
  5. I second that clevo/sager recommendation. I don't know how the prices are in the states but there is also the Acer Nitro series and Lenovo Y500 which can be pretty cheap depending on config (but still over $1000 here in Canada). The Nitro comes in many configs including ones without a dGPU so just make sure you find one with 6700hq and a 960m. Also these are very useful site for laptop reviews: http://www.notebookcheck.net/ http://laptopmedia.com/ I think they have best-laptop lists for certain price points which can be helpful edit: oh also the Dell 7550 or something is a very nice budget laptop with a 6700hq and 960m. Don't remember the other specs but Linus did a review on it
  6. Peripherals? Lol just have a logitech g302 thats was on sale for 30 bucks paired with my laptop. And 3 year old self-repaired HD449 Sennheiser headphones. Oh and my premium letter size blank printer paper mouse pad...
  7. On a 980m since life style in the past two years just benefited a lot with a mobile PC. Now I'm ready for a desktop but my wallet isn't. Getting a GPU would definitely help the budget.
  8. Wow an actual compact, high quality, and large image at a short distance capable projector. I don't keep track of how projection technology has been advancing recently but none are really making any headlines but the prices on them are still so steep. Getting one of these will definitely make me skip upgrading our humble 42" TV and would be great for parties and events which I always find myself helping with tech wise.
  9. I would like the keyboard as I've never had my first time... with using a mechanical keyboard. I threw all my money to school and my PC that I don't have the budget for good peripherals. and it doesn't help that everything is expensive with Canada's current economy.
  10. Why does everyone need an SSD? Because it is a significant improvement over HDDs. Better response time, speed, reliability, efficiency, size, noise and so on. Now why do I need an SSD? Mechanical hard drives on a laptop that gets tossed around is: 1) extremely slow. 2) Dangerous for you data. I've had HDDs die in the laptop or suddenly drop in performance and its most likely because it couldn't handle the environment its in.
  11. I'd go for the Kova. I always like having more buttons on my mouse, but both are still better than this dell office mouse I use. I also need a much better sensor with multiple dpi settings. We use some cheap mice at work but they have multi dpi settings so every time I go home and use my dell mouse I get sad. : (
  12. Would be waaayyy better than the old getto laptop setup connected to my home theatre system that struggles to run an N64 emulator.
  13. Using a 6+ year old mouse that the rest of my family keeps stealing when they don't feel like using their mouse pads(Parents and brother use laptops).
