    I got a GTX 970 which is a decent card and it gets its job done quite well under Windows but under Linux the drivers are a disaster. Also the 970 is quite troublesome when setting up GPU passthrough under Windows. And an AMD GPU should solve all these problems and it should be possible to switch between using my dedicated GPU in Linux and Windows more easily.

    I'm OK with my 970. And to me a 980 ti seems to be a waste of money. But that's up to you. You can game with a 380x just fine. It's about do you really care about dat resolution, fps, aa, textures or do your applications struggle with the 970

    What kind of graphics card do you have. And especially GDDR3? How old is your card?

    Our TV has limited multimedia functionalities. Therefore having a Steam Machine or a streaming device with something like Kodi on it would be nice. My parents only record and watch TV. Being able to watch Netflix or Youtube (especially for me) would be very convenient. :rolleyes:

    Well first remember to ask Google if you have any problems or questions you need to be solved. There is usually a forum post for everything. So as your first steps I would recommend some software you might useful. For example your favourite web browser, mail client, etc. Also what about testing Steam?

    You can try running a live OS off a USB drive. If these work perfectly fine, maybe your installation is corrupted. That is most-likely it, eventhough your checks were fine.
