  1. I experienced two MSI RX480's bought together, put in different systems, that started experiencing this problem at about the same time. In a high-intensity event, for example when loading up a game, a car blowing up in-game or running a GPU benchmark, I would lose video output and be forced to restart the computer manually. We replaced the paste on both with MX-4 thermal compound and have had two months without any issues. I think the paste dried up. Here is a step-by-step for anyone with the same issue: Remove the GPU from your system. Unscrew both the four inner screws and the backplate screws. Use a small screwdriver and punch through the warranty sticker before twisting. Remove the backplate. Flip the card over and remove one of the two sets of cables that are holding it together. This takes some serious pinching. Dip a lint-free cloth in isopropyl alcohol and clean both the die and the cooler. Apply a new thermal compound onto the die. I used an X pattern. Put the plug back, line up the pins and rescrew the card. Throw the card back into your system. Don't forget the PCIe cable. Thank so much for this thread! One of the GPU dies as it appeared when I opened it.
  2. Yeah I can get into my files and stuff just fine, I just can't boot into Windows normally.
  3. Just happened today. Backing up to a restore point gives an error, I assume because it can't detect the installation in the first place. There also wasn't anything that I installed recently that I think would effect it. Thanks for the suggestions though.
  4. Hey everyone! What happened: GPU bugged out and the screen went full green (don't worry about this issue) Reset the PC, black screen Reset again, Windows recovery is telling me it was turned off improperly What I've done so far: Ran Macrium Reflect's boot issue tool Tried to run some Bootrec commands in console, but it couldn't detect a Windows installation and told me C:\boot is missing Ran fix boot issues on my Windows installation media, failed Attempting to boot as normal off the C:\ drive just gives me a black screen. However, I did manage to get into safe mode. I tried running Bootrec /rebuildbcd in cmd, but I get "the requested system device cannot be found" after I try to add the installation. I might try reseating the GPU and attempt it with the onboard video tomorrow, but it seems to be a software issue at this point. Specs: http://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/W3jTJV GPU is 3-4 years old, the rest of it less than a year. Thanks for any help
  5. Hi guys. My Dad owns an Alienware laptop (I didn't make that choice) and he's had it for about 4 years or so now. Recently he installed a new program and now the laptop will boot into the Windows logo but follow with a black screen and cursor afterwards. So far I've tried to boot into safe mode, use the diagnosis tool on a Windows disk, run Macrium Reflect's boot issue tool and use the diagnosis tool attached to to the BIOS but nothing seems to work. The only backup is from over a year ago and there's no available restore points. We'd prefer restoring it entirely than going back to it. I've backed up his personal files using Macrium, but it would be much more preferable if we could get it to boot up. Any suggestions as to what else I could do?
  6. Yup. There's a missing pin on the HD audio cable I lined up and the USB cable only goes in one way.
  7. Hi guys. I recently finished a build with the S340 and I can't seem to get one of the USB 3.0 ports working (the other one works) and the front panel audio going. I've got it connected to the PSU and the headers plugged into the HD Audio/USB 3.0 slots on the motherboard but they don't seem to work. The HDD LED and power button works fine, too. Does anyone have any ideas as to what could be wrong apart from a faulty case?
  8. Switched. Didn't really know the difference, had to watch a TechQuckie, seems better though. Thanks!
  9. Hi there guys! My little brother has been saving up for two years for a gaming PC and he finally has enough. He's only 8, but he really wants to start making some YouTube videos. He's planning on playing Minecraft, Terra Tech and Cities: Skylines. He'll only be using Movie Maker to edit, to keep it simple for him. His favourite colours are black and red, so I was hoping to keep it at that. We're also on a budget of 1.4k AUD. I hope that this will last him 4-5 years, apart from maybe another drive and another couple sticks of RAM. We won't be overclocking. I'm also going to donate one of my 270X's I'm currently running on crossfire until the new AMD cards come out this year, then give him the other one. Any advice would be appreciated. In particular, I'm not sure how it will cool with two GPU's in there and the Australian summer. PCPARTPICKER: http://au.pcpartpicker.com/p/nPq3f7
  10. Got a 256Gb SSD right now and it's fantastic. Would love to upgrade so that I can store some games on it, though. I think anyone who is going for a 2tb HDD should consider 1tb and an SSD instead.
  11. Just out of curiosity, why is having varying monitors with Nvidia a problem? I have two different monitors, but they all have the same input/output and are all ASUS.
  12. For me, AMD cards are personal preference. I found crossfiring with my cards a piece of cake, never had any problems with the cards and am satisfied with AMD as a company. The 980ti is a viable option I suppose though.
  13. Okay. So I want to give the crossfire 270x's I have running to my brother for his new build, and I've saved up enough to get any card on the market. I run on AMD Crossfire @ 5760x1080, and my case the the Corsair 500R, and I have a h100i installed on my i5-4670K. Power isn't a problem. Basically, the questions I have are: This is my build at the moment: http://i.imgur.com/Be14pB5.jpg and the h100i radiator takes up all of the top. Do I take out my only exhaust fan at the back to put my fury x cooler there, or remove the top drive bay and have it coming through the front of the case, and install the card on the second PCI-e slot to ensure it is above the card? Will I need any adapters or whatnot to run my crossfire setup? My monitors don't have Display Port slots on them, and the fury x has 1x HDMI and 3x Display Port Is the fury x even the best option? Do I wait for the fury x2?
  14. Away from the CPU discussion, and it comes down to personal opinion, but I'd personally prefer to get the full version of Windows as opposed to the Windows OEM version. That's because Windows 10 is going to be the 'last' (probably not very last, but at least for a fairly long duration) Windows operating system. And so if you ever want to move to a different motherboard later on it's nice to have the full version so that you can do that.
  15. Sounds good. I tuned down the CPU, upgraded to Windows full, changed the PSU and removed the CPU cooler: CPU: Intel Core i3-4160 3.6GHz Dual-Core Processor ($152.00 @ CPL Online) Thermal Compound: Noctua NT-H1 3.5g Thermal Paste ($11.00 @ CPL Online) Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H97-D3H ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($149.00 @ CPL Online) Memory: Corsair Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($79.00 @ CPL Online) Storage: Samsung 850 EVO-Series 250GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($135.00 @ CPL Online) Video Card: Asus Radeon R9 270X 2GB DirectCU II Video Card (Purchased For $0.00) Case: NZXT S340 (White) ATX Mid Tower Case ($109.00 @ PCCaseGear) Power Supply: SeaSonic G 550W 80+ Gold Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply ($122.00 @ CPL Online) Operating System: Microsoft Windows 10 Home Full (32/64-bit) ($155.00 @ CPL Online) Monitor: BenQ RL2460HT 60Hz 24.0" Monitor ($139.00 @ CPL Online) Keyboard: Corsair Raptor K40 Wired Gaming Keyboard ($65.00 @ CPL Online) Headphones: Kingston HyperX Cloud Pro Headset ($95.00 @ CPL Online) Other: CAT6A Ethernet Cable ($6.00) Total: $1217.00 Look good?
