  1. sorry i couldnt hear you over the sound of the massive bag that tim apple just gave you
  2. I've replied with my spec, bare in mind I have upgraded the CPUs I would start by asking if they new the model of the car. If they didn't and didn't know how to identify the model I would give them advice like look at the badge on the front or look in the manual for the specific version. Not ask what size the engine is, "my car has a V8" doesn't help me identify what model of car it is.

  4. I think I didn't make my intentions clear enough, I have no idea where to even start. Sure I can list out every part the server has but I can't imagine that will be much help. Where do I even start to look to try and find the model of the server is more what I am asking; "or is it a case of figuring out the model of the server?" I never asked for help specing out my new build
  5. A few years ago I was given a decommissioned 1U rack mounted server. I've been running it for quite a while but, if nothing else, the noise is getting to much so I am looking to sell it on before creating a more standard tower computer. I have a few questions: How would I go about pricing the whole machine? I know/can figure out all of it's parts other than the motherboard, or is it a case of figuring out the model of the server? I have upgraded the CPUs and RAM so it wouldn't be all the standard. I am thinking of removing the HHDs. Is there anyway I can rebuild the RAID5 array I have on them without using the RAID card that the server currently has? i.e. using software RAID. Does anyone have any experience shipping servers? Also any advice on where to start looking for what sort of parts I should put in the new planned tower PC?
  6. Have you tired reseating the RAM? Try start with one stick, try it in all of the slots to see if any are dead, then swap to changing out each of the DIMMs to see if any of them are dead. Generally there isn't anything in software that you must do to make the extra 8GB available.
  7. Which keyboard do you have? Some of them allow reprogramming their keys. Thing is you would have to change the firmware of the keyboard to get any permanent change (i.e. being able to plug into a different PC with swapped keys). Or Origami Catus's suggestion will hopefully work.
  8. I didn't think PSUs really died? Kinda hoped I could keep this one until the end of time hahah. Yeah I have tried reseating everything, pushing cables etc, doesn't seem to work sadly.
  9. I need some help diagnosing this problem: at random my PC will essentially shutdown, not BSOD, instead the screen will go blank, all the usb devices will be disconnected but the fans inside of the PC will keep spinning. I am dual booting and this happens on both Windows 10 and linux. By random, I mean I could be gaming and I will get this shutdown or I could (like just happened now) be away from the computer entirely and the shutdown will happen. It doesn't happen after like 20 minutes, I could have my PC on for the entire day and it could not occur or it could be 10 minutes into me turning it on in the morning I had a suspicion it might be my motherboard, as I had an early X370 board, but swapping it out has done nothing. Now I'm thinking it is t he powersupply. My specs: Ryzen 1800X, 16GB of Corsair Vengeance ram, some Asus X370 motherboard, GTX 1070 and some random drives, Silverstone ST55F-PT 550W. I have the XMP profile applied to my RAM, but everything else is stock. Anyone know where I can even start looking?
  10. I'm pretty sure it's not my PSU, I've swapped it out before and had the same issues. Both the one I regularly use and the one I swapped in were nice ones, not some ones I picked up on ebay for nothing lmao. Just can't remember the name of the one I have atm
  11. Hi, This has started to drive me crazy. My computer will completely shutdown (no BSOD just power off) and will not turn back on until it's been power cycled. I don't have any overclocks, and it's not to do with the load on the PC. I can run Cinebench over and over with no issues, I've even had it before that it shuts down when left idling. I have a feeling that it's my motherboard as I've heard that early Ryzen boards were always a bit jank. My specs: Ryzen 1800X MSI X370 SLI Plus 1x16GB Corsair Vengence LPX MSI Armor 1070 Some silverstone modular power supply. Any help in even identifying what the problem could be would be greatly appreciated!
  12. Hi all, I am trying to set up a samba share (as the title would imply) but I can't get the permissions correct it seems... My server is running CentOS Linux 7 and my client is running Arch Linux. Using the command smbclient //192.168.1.1/dropbox -U smbclient%mypassword I get this output: Try "help" to get a list of possible commands. smb: \> ls NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED listing \* smb: \> My smb.conf is pretty long so here is the output of using testparm: [root@susan samba]# testparm smb.conf Load smb config files from smb.conf Loaded services file OK. Server role: ROLE_STANDALONE Press enter to see a dump of your service definitions # Global parameters [global] dns proxy = No log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m max log size = 50 server role = standalone server server string = Samba Server idmap config * : backend = tdb [homes] browseable = No comment = Home Directories read only = No [printers] browseable = No comment = All Printers path = /usr/spool/samba printable = Yes [dropbox] comment = Dropbox for Susan create mask = 0765 path = /disks/smb_test read only = No valid users = smbclient Doing ls -Z on smb_test shows this: drwxrws---. smbclient sambashare unconfined_u:object_r:unlabeled_t:s0 smb_test I know it will be one tiny stupid mistake! Let me know if you need any more infomation.
  13. Just something to bear in mind when looking at those pre built machines, their motherboard and PSU is normally propriety
  14. Hi all, I've recently started having the problem where when I put my PC under load it will cut out, kind of like an OCP when over clocking. However, I run my PC stock because my motherboard is janky (OC is limited at best, the onboard NIC doesn't work and the BIOS decided to lock up every once in a while). My specs are: Ryzen 7 1800X @ stock MSI X370 SLI Plus MSI Armor 1070 Corsair Vengeance LPX, rated for 3000 MHz but at 2133 MHz (or somewhere near that number) Could anyone give me a clue as to where to start looking to fix this problem? I assume I will need to get a new CPU / MoBo
  15. Then, from my experience, its something to do with the front panel. Might be worth try to jump the power switch pins with a screwdriver instead of using the case button.
  16. @Cs342 So do the fans spin when you press the power switch?
  17. I've been enjoying Destiny 2 a lot recently, just mindless shooting for an hour. Plus its free to play now.
  18. I've always been happy with NZXTs mid towers. Nice to build in, alright airflow and nice to look at. Currently I've got an S340 elite
  19. It sounds like you have put your front panel connectors in wrong
  20. I'm currently living at uni and have a server running at my parents place. To control it I normally use ssh to remote in and I can do most of the stuff through that. The only problem is that the router at my parent's place is pretty tempromental, and whenever the router resets so does the IP. I'm pretty sure I can't convince them either to shell out another ~£30 just for a static IP. I've heard of using services like Free DNS and duck DNS but I have no idea where to start with those. What solutions would you suggest?
  21. Can't believe I didn't think of that... Thanks a lot!
  22. Yes, as insecure as that sounds
  23. Hi all, I think I have a slightly strange case here: I am currently living at University, however my server is running at my parents house. I can ssh/remote desktop into it fine, using that has come in super handy. However one of the main problems so far is the fact that I can not remotely port forward anything to the server. The router I am using is the default BT one they gave us, never could convince the parents to get anything better! Searching online for "Portforward bt homepage" obviously just give tutorials on how to port forward BT, which is not what I want. Thanks, Jihakuz.
  24. 32GB of RAM, for the forseeable future, will be overkill if you are simply gaming. Most of the memory usage during gaming is on the GPU's RAM (vRAM) so you might as well save yourself some money/upgrade another part.
  25. @GoldenLag saying "waste of money" is useless unless you are giving a valid reason/alternative. Instead it just makes you look toxic and like you know very little. A 1TB SSD are no where near as expensive as they once were, only about $30 more than a 1TB HHD and a 500GB SSD (probably what you would recomend) Again with the video card, "waste of money" is useless. There may be better options but if he can find a cheapish card, it would out perform a 1050ti Next time just be a little more friendly and less aggressive. Not every one is a computer god like you.
