  1. Hey thanks! That actually gave me all of it back. Appreciate it!
  2. All I want is my dark taskbar back. This white-ish taskbar looks frickin' sickly. Blegh. I hope someone finds a solution soon; the "start, taskbar, and action center" are grayed out on my computer. Edit: dark mode will work for now, but this is dumb.
  3. My dad was somehow able to fix the boot partition with the built-in Dell repair tools. But I definitely made a backup boot USB drive for future failures.
  4. Well, but I could postpone Windows 7 updates, and I was just generally more comfortable with the layout (and lack of ads) in my Windows 7 experience. It's completely fair to say that I'm so far removed from it, it could just be me "remembering only the good times" with Windows 7. Edit: I also really, really miss Command & Conquer games, as well as many others that can't function with Windows 10 and it's lack of support for DRM. Though that's more the fault of the jerks who made the games, imo.
  5. So...my computer did the usual Windows 10 update without telling me, overnight. The difference is, this time it corrupted my boot partition! I'm wondering, has anyone else seen this problem? My techie dad was the one that saved me. I was going to reinstall windows from a recovery drive, but he was able to get the system reset through the Dell tools/troubleshooting repair options. The Windows recovery options all failed. Will we ever have anything good to say about the Windows 10 Home edition, or are we just all unwilling guinea pigs? I was one month over my warranty on this PC, and Dell wouldn't even offer me phone support without somewhere between $120 and $365 for coverage. Even though I was pretty sure I just needed someone to walk me through the non-Windows recovery options. Thought it was worth sharing! If nothing else, my brain is fried for the day. Too many nerves.
  6. Thanks! I thought about replacing the parts, but I'm not sure how far I'll have to go. If I just had to replace the hinges, it wouldn't be such a big deal. But replacing the board might be a bit too much for me. Edit: At least for an at home solution, the monitor would definitely be something worth trying! I didn't think about that. I could at least get the home use functional again, thanks!
  7. Hey all, I'm a poor dude trying to see if I can stretch out the life of my laptop and avoid replacing it until I can find work (working in retail, have a phd and have been job hunting for 3 years, no luck) that will afford me a real portable computer. My laptop, an HP ENVY TouchSmart 15 Notebook PC, has completely lost the hinge mounting on both sides of the computer. The resulting failure of the motherboard plastic near these hinges has caused the hinges to partially destroy the plastic underside as well, but I care less about appearances, and more about getting a working hinge to support my screen. Currently, the cables connecting to the screen are getting damaged by the hinge movement, so I'm keeping it shut for emergencies, but do not feel safe using it anymore. Does anyone have any ideas what I could do to fix this? Or is it a lost cause? I really don't have the budget to replace it. An equivalent lappy today is about $600. I do not think specs outside of the laptop type are useful here, but will add them as requested.
  8. He's already shipping it back. HP tech says it's a bad motherboard. Thanks for the help @RollTime and @Qwright10! I'm not sure HP tech is correct, but my dad is paying the extra $300 for the one that comes with an SSD m.2 already installed. I was just hoping to help save him some money, but it cost too much time instead.
  9. I would, but it's my dad's computer, and he's done fiddling with it for the night. I will be happy to share once we try to tackle it more tomorrow. Thanks so much for all the help so far!
  10. @Qwright10 The WD asked to put me on hold to consult her resources, then gave me a bit of an ultimatum: "change the boot sequence. If that doesn't fix it, it's Microsoft's problem." The HP person went back to the sequence of troubleshooting that they were suggesting before as if I'd said nothing at all, as if they were ignoring me.
  11. Correct, I'm quite familiar with that from having removed and reinstalling the drive continuously for both HP and WD tech "support." They both failed to resolve the issue, but they did ask us to remove the drive and try changing the boot order and a few other things. Which is why I wondered about compatibility issues, but when I asked about it, both tech teams changed the subject and refused to answer.
  12. Right, is the fact that it's an SSD an issue? I'm sorry, the m.2 technology confuses me a little. I've been in low budget PC stuff for so long, I've forgotten to keep up with this.
  13. Hey guys! My dad recently bought an HP Omen 880-160SE gaming desktop, and we tried plugging in a WD Blue 500 GB M.2 SSD. It's this one: https://www.amazon.com/Blue-NAND-500GB-SSD-WDS500G2B0B/dp/B073SBX6TY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1526611509&sr=8-1&keywords=M.2+SSD+WD+500. We started up the computer with pre-built hardware, configured Windows and then created a backup to boot from. Only problem is, we can't even get the bios to boot with the M.2 plugged in. No screen, no graphics, nothing. Is this SSD card incompatible with the HP Omen we purchased? If so, we need to know soon so we can return the drive and purchase a compatible one. We talked with WD; their "customer support" couldn't tell that an M.2 was an "internal drive" and said that if changing the boot sequence didn't fix it, it's a Microsoft problem. HP tech support didn't understand what an M.2 drive was, and we talked to them both before and after purchasing the desktop, and they've been equally unhelpful both times. Does anyone know a good resource for this? Or can answer this themselves?
  14. I would love to give my mother a set of high quality Bose headphones. She's an audiophile, and lower quality headphones and earbuds drive her crazy. I would love to get her headphones that were reliable, comfortable, and great.
