my upgrade (finally) came in today.. 

 

old genuine ersa soldering station on the left, new "RND" hakko-knockoff digital station on the right:

(yes, i know, the "RND" brand name is absolutely ridiculous, but it's appareantly a pretty good station)

    my old one is just about the same concept, the only guts it has is a transformer, a 555 timer, a transistor, an LED, a resistor for that LED, a potentiometer, and a cap to combine with that potentiometer and the 555 timer to complete a crude timing circuit.

    Save yourself some money and just get a metal coat hangar and a butane torch xD

    @OnyxArmos in this specific case, the soldering iron's first job is modifying a projector

    soldering is a meas of "glueing" electrical connections, by means of melting an alloy of lead and tin over the contacts.
