  1. Hey gang, my current rig has the following specs: CPU: Intel Core i7 - 2600K @ stock (the silicon has degraded and it won't hold a stable overclock anymore) RAM: 4 x 4 GB DDR3-1600 @ 1600 Mhz Mobo: Asus P8Z68-V Pro (one PCIe slot doesn't work, long story short my GTX 580 died two years ago and there was smoke, EVGA replaced it with a 1050 Ti under their lifetime warranty program, no video until I moved it to the other x16 slot) I currently have an EVGA RTX 2060 Super but when I eventually upgrade I'll probably move that to the new system. What I'm wondering is if 2600K and 16 GB of RAM are enough to start a home server. I'd probably set it up with unRAID, add some storage and set it up for the following functions to start: - Plex (I very rarely would need to transcode as the devices I watch on usually work fine with mkv's) - NAS (I'd three HDDs so there'd be a parity drive and then I have a spare 512 GB SSD that can be a cache) - Nextcloud (I've only recently heard of Nextcloud but if I can self-host an alternative to Google Photos/Amazon Photos to offload my iPhone pictures that'd be swell) Maybe eventually I'd add more stuff like a Minecraft bedrock server for my kids and their friends though that might be pushing it. Oh also, if I added a faster networking card would I have issues with unRAID given how old my mobo and chipset are? Thanks!
  2. I heard a lot of Steam mention in this video but the thing I'm curious about is other platforms. I use GOG 2.0 as my central game launcher so I can install and run games off of Steam, GOG, Rockstar, Bethesda, Origin, Uplay and Twitch. Does Proton only work on games from Steam? Also what about Bnet titles like Overwatch?
  3. I'm currently using a GTX 580 (it turns 5 next month!) and upgrading to a Polaris gpu would be a nice excuse to grab a new ultrawide monitor with Freesync.
  4. This thing is really sweet. I would definitely take it with me on business trips although less so for presentations and more so for watching Netflix in my hotel room on a nice big screen instead of the in room TV
  5. I'm using a Razer Blackwidow from 2011 and I want to get away from the horrible Synapse software that I've had to uninstall since the release of 2.0. Basicslly when I lock my computer with Win + L when Synapse is open my computer thinks in holding down the last key I pressed preventing me from logging into Windows unless I restart my computer. So frustrating!

  7. So I just yanked my E: drive out after trying this so my brother can use it in his new rig and apparently it worked perfectly. Computer booted into Windows with no problems. I had actually pulled my E: and F: drives out because I was going to use a Windows 8.1 install disk to perform a repair with just my SSD plugged in but I guess I don't need to now. Thanks!
  8. I'm sure people have answered this before but I notice that most of Linus' builds only have a single SSD since they store most of their data on a NAS of some sort. My question is this, what if you have somewhere in the neighbourhood of 200 games that you want to have installed and ready to rock. For instance, I have Windows installed to a 120 GB SSD and then all of my games, movies, pictures documents etc. on a 4 TB drive. This works great but if I wanted to do some kind of triple rad water cooling thing or something else that requires me to remove the hard drive mounting cages where would I install my games and stuff? Is it possible to host them on a home server or some other kind of external storage solution? I assume doing so would create some kind of delay in performance. Just curious how people get around that without having to uninstall/reinstall games that they might want to play on a whim.
  9. Nope it was brand new. Everything was brand new at the time. Originally Windows couldn't find the HDD when I plugged it in so I had to go and change some things in the BIOS to make Windows find it. At the time of install I had Windows 7 and eventually upgraded to Windows 8 (now 8.1). Not sure if that would have caused any issues or not.
  10. I installed Windows to the SSD (before plugging in the 1 TB HDD) iirc. This was over three years ago already.
  11. I'm fairly certain my C is active (wouldn't it have to be in order for my computer to successfully boot into Windows?). Does easy BCD take a look at all at all my drives/partitions and move everything over to the C drive (my SSD)? I've never used it before.
  12. Gather ye round and I shall tell ye a tale. When I first built my rig I installed it with a 120 GB SSD for my Windows install and a 1 TB HDD for everything else. Eventually I filled that HDD (thanks Steam, GOG and Humble Bundle) and decided to up the storage to 4 TB. So I threw in a 4 TB hard drive and migrated all my data from the 1 TB to this new one. Then I noticed I had some extra files sitting in there. I left them there and didn't think much of it. When I went to format the old drive Windows wouldn't do it. I went into Computer management to see if there was anything else was there and sure enough there's a 100 MB partition that I can't get rid of for some reason. But wait, there's more! When I originally pulled out the old 1 TB drive and booted up my computer Windows wouldn't boot. As soon as I plugged the old drive back in Windows booted fine. So now I'm thinking at some point in time Windows dumped some files onto the old 1 TB drive. Does anyone know how I might migrate those files back or just fix the problem in general? I'm trying to avoid doing a whole re-install. I'm not even sure how to access the smaller partition. Thinking back I might have created it by accident when I first built my computer. Thanks for reading my sad tale of confusion and ineptitude.
  13. Awe man I've been eyeing up a NUC to use an HTPC/Steam streaming solution ever since they first came out!
  14. I was just on ca.pcpartpicker.com a couple of days ago configuring a new rig and added this CPU to it. If I won it would be the perfect excuse for me to pull the trigger on replacing my current rig and then I don't know, maybe giving my current rig to someone or repurposing it into a media PC or something?
  15. Thanks everyone this has been really helpful
