  1. AMD are idiots, they can spend years and Big teams of engineers and millions of dollars on R&D to create Navi painstakingly. But they refused to do something as simple as creating a non blower stock cooler, which would have ensured the launch day reviews reported the card being cool and quiet, even when overclocking. They needed to come out swinging, not make consumers wait for more months while Nvidia responds.
  2. The architectural changes like the new CU design have greatly increased the geometry performance. Previously AMD needed 64 CUs to beat the GTX 1080. Now with just 40 CUs they are going past it and the RTX 2070 as well.

  4. The most important thing will be the pricing changes. In terms of engineering, architecture and raw performance Turing was good. The problem was that it did not move price/performance forward in the way that previous GPU generations did because of how Nvidia priced it.

  6. Ya, I was pointing out that even for two PC systems with a load power difference of 100W it would be very difficult to generate any savings if you are gamer.
  7. ya exactly. It's much better to just say "I want the newest and shiniest thing because I like tech and can afford it, it gives me satisfaction".
  8. To even generate that much savings per day it would have to be 8 hours under load per day such as gaming!!! And people with jobs like most of us just don't have the time to play games anywhere close to that much. The rest of the time when your PC is just doing mundane tasks or idling there is no difference between a GTX 1050ti or a Vega 64 in terms of power consumption. Power bills are more of a concern for continuous loads, like miners.
  9. ya I also find it surprising when people with AMD R7 2700x or Intel i7 8700K CPUs say they are looking forward to switching to a Ryzen 3800x. We see it in the GPU front as well with people switching cards for just 20% more performance... And here I am still using my Sapphire R9 290 Vapor-x after 5 years since it's still very good at 1080p and I don't feel the GPU price/performance has moved forward enough since then.
  10. Thing is CPU horsepower normally doesn't improve that fast. What we have got from the R5 1600x to R5 2600x to R5 3600x is actually good by industry standards when considering the combination of IPC and clockspeed progression over just two years. GPU price/performance tends to improve faster (at least until recent RTX cards). Regarding the lower price now of the second gen ryzen parts you will probably see similar price drops for the third gen parts in time before they introduce the fouth gen.
  11. Everybody expected HBM prices to come down, and supply to go up over time. But it didn't happen (so far) and hence AMD was screwed, because they had two successive generations of high end GPUs (Fiji and Vega) which were designed around HBM and became supply constrained and more expensive to produce than planned. Not sure if that was bad luck or bad planning by AMD.
  12. Ya, that's where I stand on it atm. I think they have put significant engineering resources into reworking it. Now whether it's any good both in the form of Navi and other future RDNA iterations remains to be seen.

  14. The GTX 1660 is a good buy! This performance tier is a good buy now. Definitely choose it over the GTX 1060. Don't purchase a GTX 1070. If you want that level of performance or higher better wait until July Navi launch to see the new products available and the price shake up from both AMD and Nvidia. We will get more info on June 10th. If you have to buy right now and want GTX 1070 like performance then get a GTX 1660ti.
  15. If it's a reference design which keeps the card running cool like the Radeon 7 then people would be fine with it. If not there should be aftermarket models available at launch. I too do not like overly flashy RGB stuff, but cannot stand hot and loud blower coolers. I was not particularly fond of these examples but took it as a positive sign if it means there are going to be aftermarket models available in general.
  16. Not for the general public but for particular groups. By having more vulnerabilities exposed continuously over the last couple of years it has eroded trust in Intel as a secure platform and their engineering capabilities, or raised suspicions about the shortcuts they make for performance. -IT administrators -Laptop and Server OEMs -Data Center / cloud infrastructure providers
  17. Nice! That's what we want to see. From launch day itself a variety of models with 3 fans, heatpipes, backplates etc which will run cool and quiet.. No more giving us crappy blowers and asking us to wait. kinda sneaky of asrock to bypass the embargo by showing concepts.
  18. Good freesync monitors are already performing as well as more expensive g-sync monitors. Now obviously a cheap ass freesync monitor is not going to compete with something twice the cost (g-sync or otherwise). However if AMD wants more premium freesync displays they have to become more competitive in the discrete GPU market.. simple as that. Or else monitor manufacturers have less incentive to put out high quality freesync displays.
  19. Do Nvidia drivers really suck that bad that well reviewed freesync monitors with LFC and good operating ranges cannot play well with Geforce cards like they do with Radeon? Have they implemented driver level low framerate compensation for compatible monitors like AMD has? i.e. if the minimum monitor refresh is 40Hz and the framerate drops to 30fps, my GPU will double it to 60Hz by displaying each frame twice. Thus keeping it within the refresh window. If I drop to 10fps my GPU will display each frame 4 times and so on to stay at 40Hz+... Does Nvidia do this at the driver level like AMD does if the monitor input range is wide enough? Or are they totally reliant on the presence of their proprietary g-sync modules on the monitor to achieve the same effect.
  20. Yes true. However 7nm is still relatively new. So the process node will mature, and a year from now as fabrication continues we will probably start seeing people hitting higher stable overclocks with the same voltage. Same holds for Navi and Radeon 7...
  21. Yep, fully agree. I expect 4.7Ghz to be the common point most overclockers will hit. 4.8 for those who are lucky with good silicon.
  22. The demo they showed was worrying. In Strange Brigade the Vega 64 already beats the RTX 2070. So the new Navi part they showed was basically only on par with Vega 64 performance. Although it can still be impressive if it turns out to be a smaller part with ~48CUs performing like a Vega 64.
