  1. That's impressive. What did you replace the stock TIM with?
  2. What's your cooling setup? And post an update after 15-30mins.
  3. Would that really match the single threaded performance of the G3258? I'm not even convinced any game I'd try to play with the machine would benefit much from a quad core.
  4. I'm planning on building a backup PC for older games with a spare R7870 I have and I'm having trouble choosing a processor. I'm mainly struggling between a G3258 + H81M-P33 for about ~120€ or an i3 6100 + mobo for almost 50% more. I have no plans on upgrading this PC so the argument of an upgrade path with the i3 is out. Mainly wondering if the 6100 would give any appreciable difference in game performance with the R7870 compared to an OCd G3258. I would mainly be running games of the caliber of FO3/FNV, CS:GO, Far Cry 2 and Deus Ex : HR.
  5. I'm currently considering building a G3258 mATX & R7870 PC while waiting for Kaby Lake to upgrade my main system. The Pentium rig is mainly meant for games like CS:GO, FO3, FNV, and other older games I'm thinking would prefer high single thread performance and a Windows 7 environment, and would transition to backup duties later on. NAS use for it is also on the table, but it would probably force me away from small form factor. Anyone have any first hand experience how the mentioned build would do with such games? General thoughts on the subject? Having this build would also allow me to wait a little and watch the prices of the new architectures settle, not to mention not having to fight with the availability at launch. E: I currently only own two systems, both Phenom II based, which do not give me an acceptable experience with even Fallout 3 and New Vegas.
  6. Can not deal with buying used I'm afraid. But will look into the possibility of G3258 + R7870 holding me over until the new processor releases are here and properly available. Cheers for the help. Other takes on the dilemma are also still welcome, I like to have all the info and opinions before making any purchases. Also specific motherboard recommendations are very welcome for the possibility of going G3258 as a backup and for older titles + later possible NAS use.
  7. Been looking at exactly those, but they seem to still be around 100€ which seems very high for a 70€ processor. Also don't expect to need much upgrade potential for this possible Pentium system since it would be delegated to NAS and backup PC duty.
  8. I am aware of this, and have had trouble finding both budget and overclocking friendly motherboards for the little beast. Would like to keep the system as a backup and possibly a NAS as well.
  9. I won't be able to wait until Zen and Kaby Lake are both widely available, and the pricing at launch will most likely not be worth the another slight performance gain. Also I don't see myself going past 1440p, since I really want to get into higher Hz monitor gaming as well. Though, I might consider getting a G3258 based small form factor system to hold me out until the newer and better things are available, since I suppose it would be enough to run some of the older games I wish to replay anyway.
  10. So games don't really benefit from the higher base clocks of 6700K then I suppose? Does it at least heighten the OC ceiling at all? I will reiterate, my main point with considering a higher end CPU than 6600K was to attempt to future proof the platform for gaming further into the future. I don't expect to require editing horsepower more than I would have with the i5, I just want to avoid having to build another system from the ground up (barring the excellent SuperNova 750W G2) within few years to keep up with modern titles. Is there any indication games are going to start seriously benefiting from hyper threading or couple extra cores anytime in the next maybe 5 years?
  11. Z170-A looks promising. Haven't decided on any particular colour scheme yet, so it also seems neutral enough. Would you mind expanding your rationale on this choice?
  12. Motherboard suggestions are also very welcome. Once again looking for the most modern features like M.2 and USB3.1 and C, for that loathsome word 'future proofness.' Another possibly relevant point would be that I'll be using external DACs exclusively, so 'killer onboard audio' will be a waste, as well as RGB.
  13. I'm currently looking to upgrade my headache inducing Deneb based system to something modern. I plan on buying a new motherboard, CPU, RAM and case for now. I'm in Finland, but will probably order at least some parts from Germany as well. My budget goes as such: CPU ~240-340€, MoBo ~150-200€. I've already settled on Corsair LPX 3000MHz DDR4 2x8GB and EVGA 750W G2. I will also be needing a case, for which I have no budget decided yet. I'm very much drawn to the mid tower cases like S340 red/black, but might also go for something lower cost since S340's are almost 100€ around here, and I would like to scavenge my BR drive from one of my old machines. Another stuff I'll be reusing from previous builds will be a 480GB SanDisk SSD, R7870, a beefy Noctua CPU cooler and a 1080p monitor, or possibly two. Though I'm planning on moving up to 1440p 100Hz+ once I decide on the GPU upgrade as well. My main headache is the CPU decision. I don't really do anything multi threaded for now, but I'm also hesitant going with an i5 for now if I decide to start doing something more CPU intensive, or if games actually start taking advantage of more than four cores sometime in the lifespan of this PC's CPU. So, 6700K or an enthusiast platform 6-core possibly? For now my main games have been casual CSGO to keep up my FPS aim, and mainly Fallout and Elder Scrolls games, but I'm very interested in getting into the more demanding AAA titles, especially Witcher 3. I've heard there are compatibility problems with the Pascal and some new GPU drivers and FO3 and FNV for example, and since the availability and prices are still flaky for the new GPUs here I'm only upgrading the platform for now. Excuse the rambling, grammar errors and terribly formatted post, it's very late. Also I'm confident I've forgotten a lot of important information, so please feel free to ask for clarification.
  14. Currently running an R7870 and would love to be able to be able to play some newer AAA games for a change.
  15. Seems ideal for an all-around multimedia + casual gaming PC.
