  1. Just FYI, Pewdiepie is addressing such problems as well and is using the current attention spike to not only raise awareness but also funds for poor children in India. He is neither begging for subscribers, nor trying to suppress his competition. It is primarily the community which tries to keep him at the #1 spot. Someone bought for example an ad on the biggest billboard in the center of New York city and other YouTubers like Boogie2988 and MrBeast also participate. In the near future he will be topped for sure, but why not try to delay this as long as possible.
  2. Source: Wired As the "battle" between the YoutTube channels of Pewdiepie and T-Series for the channel with the most subscribers on YouTube is entering the final phase, (yesterday the minimum difference was less than 15000 subscribers), fans of the Swedish comedian and video game commentator are desperately trying to keep the gap alive with various stunts. The most recent and tech-related one is encouraging people to subscribe to Pewdiepie via a printed message sent to 50000 vulnerable printers over the internet. Here is the message: Personal opinion: It seems like a funny and unique way to encourage people to subscribe to Pewdiepie. (And someone has already realized that this way of message delivery could even be abused as a new way of advertisement, see Forbes) Additionally, raising awareness for such vulnerabilities without causing real damage is always a good thing. Although in this case I am not certain to which degree this justification of the perpetrator is just pretext. Finally, I for myself would like to encourage people of the LTT community to subscribe to Pewdiepie. His content might not be to the taste of everyone, but he is definitely someone who representing the YOU in YouTube (especially in comparison to a channel like T-Series) and is to some degree something like the figure head of the YouTube community. So trying to keep his channel on the #1 spot as long as possible seems like a good and entertaining idea.
  3. My current plan for the next GPU would be an AIO Model with it's rad at the exhaust of the case. That at least in my theory should keep the card as cool as possible and avoid high temperatures inside the case in general since the hot air will get immediately blown out of the case.
  4. Here is a picture of the system: Case is a Fractal Define C TG I think I somewhat have a temporarily solution approach by limiting the Power Limit to 65%. With this, the GPU throttles to about 1730 MHz which funnily enough is the advertised boost clock of the 1080 at nvidia.com and the temperature max is about 79C which is somewhat acceptable but still quite high.
  5. Today I replaced the thermal paste with Noctua NT-H1 and checked for dust but there wasn't anything noteworthy, since the case has a dust filter. Sadly this did not affect the problem, but what I realized was directly after starting the pc the temperatures were rising more slowly. I opened the side panel of my case to allow for a better airflow and the card seems to stabilize at 80C without any throttling. But 80C for an open case still seems way to high from what I would have expected. I also rechecked some reviews for the card and most of them mention load temps in the low 70s.
  6. Fans are definitely running under load. As for the % speed, according to afterburner and the attached pictures of the first post they go up to about 82%. At idle state the card also goes into zero fan mode without showing problems in this direction. The occurring throttling is without any question. The main question is whether the occurring amount of throttling is "normal" for this kind of card or if the card should throttle at all, especially since I did not recognize any kind of issues in the past 2 years. It's just too lang ago since I checked the GPU temps the last time to remember exactly, but I have the vague memory that the card never reached it's max temp under load before.
  7. So hi there, I have the following situation (sorry for the long explanation): I bought my MSI NVIDIA GTX 1080 Gaming X 8G in late August 2016 and until last week I was more then happy and never had any issues. (Other then the factory overclock, the card is not additionally overclocked) But last week while playing Vermintide 2 I noticed the first issues in form of what seemed to be lags at first. The game would slow down (almost like slow-motion but not freezing) and after a few seconds the game speed would increase significantly (probably to compensate the lost time?). This occurred only for me and while playing with friends they mentioned that my in-game movement is very strange when this is happening but for them the in-game time is not affected and they do not have any issues. After ruling out the possibility of internet/connectivity issues, I dug deeper into the matter with MSI Afterburner and discovered that these "hiccups" coincide with a massive drop in GPU and CPU- usage (see Spoiler). Additionally I realized that my GPU temperature is unfamiliar high and reaching it's temperature limit of 83C. So my conclusion was that the card probably must be thermal throttling (Last week was extremely hot and the room temp went up to 32C and higher). In an attempt to temporarily circumvent the issue, I increased the Temp Limit in Afterburner to it's maximum of 92C and at first that seemed to have resolved the problem. But this week, even though the room temperature went down to ~25C again, the same issued arose but now at the elevated Temp Limit of 92C. Since that did not solve the problem, I did set the Limit again to it's default value and instead tried to decrease the in-game graphics settings from extreme to high. Even though the GPU usage did not reach 100% with the new setting, the temperature reached the max of 83C and the hiccups occurred. At this point I suspect that something is either wrong, dying or already dead and I'm looking for help to further specify if the card has an real issue and what might be the exact case. (Since the card is not completely 2 years old, German warranty might save me if i can confirm the card really has an issue). Or otherwise seek for confirmation if the card displays completely normal behavior. Other things I checked so far: - I reran the 3DMark Fire Strike Extrem benchmark and discovered that compared to my last run in December (10028 points), I got lower scores (9868 and 9917 points). I have not changed any settings of my PC since then. - I conducted a ~12 min FurMark stress test (see Spoiler). - About an hour ago I tried to log the Afterburner data for another Vermintide 2 run, but did not have any "hiccups" for this run. What is kinda noteworthy, is that the Core Clock steadily throttled to 1683 MHz at the end of the run (see Spoiler) If anyone could provide some insight to the issue and maybe help determining what is happening, that would really help me out. Thank you very much in advance Afterburner Screenshots are in the Spoiler section:
  8. Having some experience with IR spectroscopy and other lab equipment at university and in the industry, the BS of those scanners is pretty obvious. Personally, I would be glad to see some kind of correction or at least acknowledgement of the likeliness of a scam at the Techquicky video. As it stands people might see the video and believe it to be a real working thing and are more likely to get ripped off. Especially since the LTT brand has a huge reach and influence. This should really be a topic of discussion especially for Techquicky. The person who has written the script should have had enough knowledge of the topic to at least smell that something is fishy, or otherwise might not have been suitable to create educational (in a wider sense) content for this specific topic. At the same time I totally understand that LTT is more "Tech" regarding computer hardware then scientific equipment. It is just kinda frustrating to see more and more YouTube videos and news articles reporting about science by repeating some mumbo jumbo they have read online or provided by some marketing department without questioning it because they did not really understand the topic. A final footnote regarding Thunderf00t. I really love and hate his videos at the same time. He presents the scientific facts for many scams and other dubious claims in an easy and understandable way be using rough estimates (see Fermi estimation) and short mini experiments. But he tends to repeat himself and his arguments waaay to often as well as showing the same graphs and animations not once or twice but more like 20 times.
  9. Hey guys, right now I am considering changing from Dropbox to my own local Cloud- and Storagesolution with a Synology NAS and I have a few questions about the Hardware and Softare specs. I know there is already a lot of information available on the internet, but i still feel like most are only answered very vague so I really want to make sure before buying something and then realizing it won't work that way. First of all what I want to be able to do and who will be using it: - Primarily me and my girlfriend are going to access the NAS, but maybe my parents are going to back up very important Data via Internetaccess. - Client for Windows that runs when my Computer starts and is constantly syncing in background (like the Dropbox-software) - 2-Way Sync important folders (like Personal Documents etc.) with my Home-PC, Notebook as well as the Home-PC of my girlfriend and the NAS, so that it's the same state everywhere. - Having Access to older versions of important documents (Master's thesis for university), so it's not just a simple backup but is also able to restore mistakes like overwriting. (However for something like this, a NAS won't be the only Backup) - Automaticly uploading the Camera-folder of our Smartphones via Internet (and if possible only while having WLAN) - Accessing everything while on the go with my Smartphone without having everything stored all the time on the phone. - Additional Storage-space that is just saved on the NAS (like an external Harddrive) that in the best case can only be accessed via local network and not via internet - Maybe if possible: Storing my Steam-games on the NAS so that if i wanna play i can either transfer the files to my PC or if thats possible even run them via accessing the NAS-drives - backing up the data on the NAS with an additional external Harddrive via USB once in a while (best case: just plug it in on the NAS and the sync starts automaticly) For this purpose I'm considering the following devices with 2x 2TB WD-Red HDDs in Raid 1 and using the software provided by Synology: Synology DS215j (800 MHz DualCore, 512 MB RAM, 2-Bay, 1 Ethernetport) Synology DS215+ (1.4 GHz DualCore, 1 GB RAM, 2-Bay, 2 Ethernetports) Synology DS715 (1.4 GHz QuadCore, 2 GB RAM, 2-Bay, 2 Ethernetports) So here are my questions: Are all of my desired features possible with the Synology software (and hardware)? Both the DS215+ and the DS715 offer Link Aggregation with 2 Ethernetports. Does this really make a difference in reallife performance (does anyone have experience with it?) and will it make a difference for my kind of workload? Same question as above but for CPU and RAM (while as far as i have understand, there won't be any difference)? Or should i consider something completely different? Thank you very much for your help.
  10. Does this mean if we are regarding Steam Hardware Survey Video Card usage (Nvidia 52,47%, Intel 19,69% and AMD 27,34%) with further assuming that every Nvidia-card-owner is using Steam (because they have no APU), that about 6,67% of Intel-owners and 68,80% of AMD-owners are using Steam?
  11. The german newssite Heise.de reported that Google and Samsung announced a new update schedule for fast over air security patches on their android-devices due to the recently discovered vulnerabilty known as StageFright, which can manipulate devices not just by receiving MMS, but also by video-files. These updates will take place regularly about once per month and Google is starting today with updating the Smartphones Nexus 4,5,6, the Tablets Nexus 7,9,10 as well as the Nexus Player. My personal opinion is security vulnerabilies like Stagefright are extremely dangerous and it's good if they are patched as fast as possible, but we will have to see which devices are really going to get these updates especially on the Samsung-site. 12. So as far as I've read and understand, those videos can be transmitted via social media apps like WhatsApp, Facebook+Messenger etc. as well as MMS(+Hangouts) and using browsers on infected sites, am I wrong? Does anyone know if this kind of video can than be easily send per command to all contacs via the above named apps with this level of access? And how could someone regain access to his one smartphone? This whole thing makes me feel pretty uneasy
  13. To be honest, I'm not to worried about that at all. An upcoming new technology might cause the loss of some specific type of work, but at the same time new work types were created and the rest of the people find new things to do too. For example look at the implementation of machines in aggriculture. Sure a lot of field workers lost their jobs, but at the same time there were new people needed who manufacture and maintain those machines. At the same time due to the fact that significantly less people were needed for providing food to the population, there is an enourmous increase in the service sector as well as the creation of new things which everyone wants to have (iPhones...). So in my opinion neither will we gain a lot of spare time to do what we want while getting everything for free, nor will we all lose our jobs and suffer an economic crysis. Only few people who are not be able to adept to the new type of work which will be demanded, may get some problems...
  14. Dude, you should reread that article... They are just preparing a strategy for eventually future solar storms and telling people how they should prepare themselves in this kind of event. Really nothing to worry about.
