  3. So hear me out: most older folks aren't going to cancel their cable subscriptions. Sure, they'll use streaming services, but to enhance rather than to replace their sports/24-hour news needs. Remember TiVo? They just came out with this awesome product called the "BOLT." TiVo basically brought the DVR to most households, but I'd honestly forgotten about them in the last five years. And the thing is, to a younger person like myself, the BOLT is exactly four to five years too late. I've never had a cable subscription and probably never will. For my parents though, and I guess adults that have cable, this little box is the perfect melding of cable service and awesome streaming services. Let me sell you on this: 1. The remote control actually has a dedicated "skip commercial" button. No need to skip forward thirty seconds or do anything actually: you just hit a button and it goes right to the program. How badass is that? I mean the box actually presents you with a dialog box: skip commercials? Bet your sweet ass I do. This wizardry is made possible because TiVo has real people watching TV and segmenting the commercial bits. So damn cool. 2. You know how podcasting apps (and YouTube, actually) give you the option to speed stuff up a bit, like double time or 1.5x? This is actually a great way to get through long videos, like the WAN show, if crunched for time. The Bolt can do the same thing, but with TV! The setting is thirty percent faster than normal, with some fancy pitch control in the background to remove the squeaky effect. I really like the combination of commercial skip and this sped up deal. It allows more efficient consumption of some of the more lengthy sports (golf), but I bet my Dad would love it to get through the Sunday Morning shows we watch: "Meet the Press" and "Face the Nation." 3. Obviously the thing is the world's most badass DVR, letting you record up to four shows at once (even in 4k), and letting you stream those shows to any device on your network. I think extending the Living Room experience to the rest of the house is good use of that cable subscription. Mom could watch her show from last night on the kitchen tablet while making lunch, streamed from the TiVo. 4. Streaming services are straight up included in the box, so your parents won't have to mess with inputs. You'll just have to sign in to Hulu, Netflix, Spotify, etc... and they'll just have to turn on the TV to get it all going. Did I mention that it can do all of that in glorious 4k? Finally, I think this little guy is arriving to the market a few years too late, but it is an excellent buy for my Mom and Dad, and really many families, because they haven't cut the cord and probably never will. The Bolt lets a family like mine get the most use out of their expensive ass cable subscription, while also adding modern streaming services to their television with no fuss. The TiVo BOLT 500GB Unified Entertainment System: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B013X8YI5I/ $299.00 (USD) PS: How about a review of this bad boy, LMG?
  4. Username: Dwight 1. Hardline Water Cooled PC Build Log - Yes, you can play Battlefield on it vessel.com/videos/JYZEYDYx0 Rather bummed I can't "like" the video on Vessel... Content itself was pretty schweet. However, I'm an air-cooled kind of guy as the idea of liquid so near computer parts makes me rather anxious. I will say the mineral oil build was absolutely wonderful. Big fan of Puget systems keeping those cases around considering how totally niche an oil build is. 2. Insane Storage Server - Fully 10 Gigabit Network, $1,500 Switch vessel.com/videos/LCoY5zfFf I won't pretend to completely understand what was going on in this video. But I always enjoy a behind the scenes look at the framework of LMG. Those servers are what holds this screwy operation together! Edit: If I were to pick my favorite two videos OF ALL TIME from these kooks: gotta be the Germany videos. Specifically the Cherry and Sennheiser factory tours were honestly just wonderful. I guess I had never really thought about the intense amount of effort and time that went into making the MX Green switches on my keyboard. The attention to detail was just so German, and I really admired that. There are a ton of MX clones these days, but I could never really like them as much as Cherry. And man, somehow the Sennheiser tour planted this entirely irrational need for a pair of HD-800 headphones.
  5. Okay so the first thing I try to get on every piece of electronics kit I buy. The two-year Square-trade drop and spill warranty is SOLID. You're insured for the full price of the device, so if you buy it used and fuck it up, you either get a repair or a cash refund to Paypal for the full brand new price. Anyway that seemed relevant for some reason. Two devices, the purchase of both at least somewhat based off Linus reviews. The Pebble smartwatch is BADASS and totally worth buying just for the fact that you won't be checking your phone like a maniac every five minutes. My phone is always on silent now since ringtones and notification noises would be redundant. I got mine for like 90 bucks on Swappa, and it is 99 dollars brand new from getpebble.com. Second are the Jaybird Bluebuds X, which are wireless bluetooth earbuds. I use them all the time out of the house. It is so nice to have no wires in my way and it's a nice combination with the Pebble for full music control. Great for working out! Sound quality, range, and battery life are all quite good.
  6. Phew, the biggest? Huge question and there are great answers here already. But I'm going to go out on a limb here and point out how awesome the UPS (uninterruptable power supply) is for normal guys in IT. There's probably one (or a couple) of these bad boys behind every website on the internet today. Then there's all of the schools, businesses, and man caves that rely on this technology when the power stops being reliable. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uninterruptible_power_supply
