  1. While I generally agree with this, in this situation it's misleading because "internet connectivity" is more of a side effect rather than its actual purpose and typically when naming something it'd make more sense for the name to incorporate or imply its actual/main purpose (I haven't given this much thought, but it'd be like calling a screwdriver an opener or something because you can use it like a crowbar to open things).
  2. I wanna say that if you're happy with the performance of a $1500 laptop (I'm converting to £ when I consider it since that's what I work with), spending the same amount of money on a desktop would probably be overkill. I'd recommend (which is essentially what I'll be doing at uni) is having a good desktop and a cheap but competent on-the-go laptop. Knowing that I can remotely access my desktop to do any heavy lifting from afar. Again, whether this is ideal or not for you will depend on your circumstances.
  3. Video playback is a ton less demanding than rendering games at the same resolution.. I'm sure gpus do have a maximum capacity where they simply can't render output higher than a specific resolution, even if it's just video playback, but I can say for certain a 960 can easily handle 2k. If an internal network is to the internet what breakfast is to dinner in your analogy then I guess that's true... However that's inaccurate since the internet is a collection of internal networks so using your analogy it'd be more like dinner consists of multiple breakfasts. Going off-track, basically a dinner table is an inappropriate analogy.
  4. I personally don't mind the initial startup screen and the big "app drawer" type way of laying out all programs is more cumbersome than dreadful in my eyes. The Win10 menu actually seems to fit my ideal thinking about it but something about the way it worked when I was trying out the preview just made the grid section and the list section so disjoint.
  5. Huh.. Perhaps I wasn't recalling my research from a while back correctly.. I seem to recall wireless fidelity being part of their slogan.
  6. That was my fear. Well in the case of ASFI, it's inaccurate because it's possible to connect to a wifi network which is incapable of connecting to the internet. I don't think wifi stands for wireless fidelity.. Supposedly the official name is just wifi.
  7. My concern is whether I can actually believe her that there's a wired access point.
  8. Recently got an accommodation offer for my Uni. I sent an email asking (among other things) if they had wired access points for internet.. Their response: I don't know what to make of it tbh...
  9. RuneScape if we're talking about an actual computer game... Before that it'd be those kiddy games.. I vaguely remember playing a Lion King game and a Digimon game going back the better part of 15 years ago...
  10. I'd recommend getting a desktop tbh. The benefits of a laptop are generally if you're a student living in a small dorm room or something with limited space and you need to travel a lot but the problem with high speced laptops is that they're generally bulky and heavy, making them less than ideal for carrying around and using all over the place.
  11. Not play games, but video content like youtube and I guess blurays.
  12. 700? Please.. I looked at my mum's computer a year after I got it for her and it had like 2000.. B) Oh god I forgot about that! I think they even said it'd be like mega quick charging which is why I'm sure non-debunkers/the curious did it. Not sure if I mentioned it in this thread or a different one but a colleague of mine got a 4k tv and said it was awesome, so much better than his old 1080p one... None of the sources of content he was watching produced 4k content.. (including his ps4). Same colleague thinks consoles are better performance wise than pc's and that a pc having the benefits of.. Well a pc, is a bullshit reason for why they're better value. Side note though - wasn't there a firmware upgrade or something that allows ps4's to do 4k playback?...
  13. Unfortunately I can't for a couple of reasons: I'm not in the US I have 0 desire for a tv and have never looked. The only reason I feel it's possible is because a couple months ago a couple of my colleagues were talking about it and the prices they were mentioning were between £700 and £800 (between $1000 and $1200) which was the sort of price range my colleague was looking to buy.
  14. No clue. Never bought anything near that expensive.
  15. Source : http://hugelol.com/lol/348604 You know.. Considering how gullible non-techies are.. I wonder how many times they've found an image like this and believed it..
  16. You can either let it examine your comp specs using Java, or if you're uncomfortable with that just look at the game specs that it lists. I've been using for years without issue.
  17. This is what I use to check game compatibility: http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri It basically has a database of the recommended specs of games and say if what you have stacks up.
  18. Pretty sure you can get some 4k tvs at that price range.
  19. Ah right. You'll probably have the same experience as me then. Just remember to purchase from Amazon themselves, not a reseller. Oh and you won't get your money back until they've processed your return which could be a couple of days after you've sent it back (just last week I returned a headset ~£150 and got my money back 3 days after I sent the product back).
  20. UPDATE Got the computer booting. Issue now is when I go to bios it says cpu fan error. CPU fan is also no longer revving. Any ideas?
  21. New build. Having trouble trying to get it to boot. If need be I can get the names of the actual parts but at the moment - the new parts are the psu, mobo and cpu. Everything else was harvested from a perfectly working machine. Power LED on mobo indicates it's receiving power. Full disclosure - when I first plugged in the power cable the led didn't turn on. I had to flick the switch on the psu twice (so off and then back on) before the led on the mobo turned on. It has since remained switched on. What's happening is I press the power button on the tower. Lights turn on (gpu, front panel etc.), fan starts revving. Lasts for a second at most and there's a faint click sound and the lights go off and the fan stops. My immediate guess is maybe a faulty psu? It's a 500w and the one in my other build (where the scavenged parts are from) had a 550w so I don't think lack of power would be the issue. All feedback appreciated! Side note - even though I've suggested it, please give non-faulty component suggestions.

    USB hubs

Off the top of my head the most demanding items that I'd put on there would be a webcam (720p 60fps capable), wacom tablet and a 360 controller. Other than that it'd be small storage devices like usbs (sd's via usb etc.). While not heavy file transfer, poll-rate is a thing so not sure how that'd come into play..

    USB hubs

In the processing of putting together/shrinking down my pc to take to uni. Seems the new build lacks the ports for all my peripherals (who knew how much they build up?). Anyone have any experience with these sorts of devices and their reliability? Thinking of buying this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00E0NH9FC?colid=1H2YJMXIFL5WV&coliid=I3VYI2LZD99XF7&psc=1&ref_=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl But wondering if I'd be better off saving money with this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B003M0NURK/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_ttl_encoding=UTF8&colid=1H2YJMXIFL5WV&coliid=IZJ5V3N37U8FQ&psc=1
  24. Sometimes it's just iffy. That's all I can come to from my limited usage of it.
