  1. Also the 970 is in its early days. We have yet to see MFAA and it's performance benefits yet (Not to mention DX12). I'd say 970 unless you can get the 290 or 290x on a good sale.
  2. Whatever seems smooth to you. Usually more is better, but the human eye does not see in "frames per second." For me, I have been playing at 60hz and its looking smooth. I'm sure 120 or 144 he looks smoother, but I don't think my gameplay would improve too much using a higher refresh rate. If you want the best experience and money is not a barrier, go for the highest refresh rate and use G-sync or Freesync. If money is a major factor, I'd say try both out someplace. If you think 120hz is worth the money, then aim your build there. If 60, then you can save some money.
  3. I have the i5 2400 and a Gtx 970 (overclocked to 1.5ghz) and they work fine together. MSI, Asus, and Gigabyte all sell good cards. I've heard mixed reviews about the Zotac and EVGA 970s (EVGA used to have some problems with the cooler, but this issue could be fixed, it's been maybe 2 weeks since I've researched it) If overclocking is important to you, the gigabyte card is probably your go-to card, but really, the 970 from any brand will kick ass and stay cool since it is so power efficient. MSI and ASUS have the fans-off when idle mode if noise really bothers you. Still, the fans on my gigabyte model are whisper quiet.
  4. My favorite part here is the EDG750 PSU because the loudest part of my build is the PSU. I'm kinda a silence nut though, so all these parts look super attractive T.T random number generator, the fate of my PSU rests in your generator thing <3
  5. So I have been researching which GTX 970 to buy and have found a few things out. ASUS strix has only 1 8-pin power connector. Shouldn't this hinder the overclocking abilities of this card? Gigabyte's card is too long to fit in my case. (otherwise this would have been a no-brainer) MSI has the same power pin configuration as Gigabyte, so I would expect to find similar overclocking abilities at higher temps/noise EVGA seems to be using poor-quality components, so I don't want to touch their cards. Zotac has 2 6-pin connectors. Zotac AMP edition has 2 8-pin connectors. I have heard of some crazy overclocks on this card, but I don't know how much of it is marketing and if Maxwell even benefits from more than 14 total pins. Also it is triple slot, which I would use but I'm not too eager to. I am leaning right now towards buying a Zotac or MSI 970, but I've seen on newegg that Zotac cards are frequently DOA. Also, we all know that MSI has been having fan problems recently. Just eBay twin-frozer replacement fans and you will see what I mean. So, what have you all found out regarding overclocking and reliability of these cards? I know the MSI cooler here has new and redesigned fan blades, but I would bet the insides of these fans are the same as the old.
  6. What would be an acceptable price for a 280X in 100% like new condition? I paid $250 last week. And sorry, I was not aware that there was a classifieds section.
  7. This one is practically new. I've had it for 1 week. Lowered to $200.
  8. Hey guys! I'm trying to sell my r9 280x. Thought I would offer a good deal to the the forum-goers! $200 + shipping to wherever you are (USA only, I am in California.) I bought it new last week off eBay as an upgrade for my gaming rig, but I found myself needing an NVIDIA card for my workstation computer since AMD does not offer CUDA. The card works perfectly and is ideal for 1080p gaming. This card requires power from one 6-pin and one 8-pin connector. VisionTek does not include a crossfire bridge for multi-gpu support, but the card is crossfire compatible like all other 280Xs. I've barely used it and it has no scratches on it or any damage whatsoever. Heck, I haven't even overclocked the thing yet. Fire strike score: 7660 Max Temp after running Fire strike twice: 77C with max fan speed at 43%--1430 RPM (I like my system quiet) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ AMD r9 280X No mining or overclocking has been done on this card. Runs BF3 at 60fps. If you are interested in buying this card please message me! I would love to get it out of my system to make room for an NVIDIA card. Everything pictured is included. Hopefully we can each do each other a favor.
  9. Thank you for all the quick replies! I'll see about selling it for $250 locally. Thanks for the tips!
  10. So I am consulting these forums because I am sort of a noob, and I have heard these forums are much more friendly than others. I would like the value/worth of a PC I built entirely out of scrap parts, but I have no idea how to price it since the parts are: 1--old and 2--server parts I understand most people who buy used computers look for high performance/cost ratio, but in server hardware, pricing is based more on reliability and accuracy rather than performance, and there lies the pricing issue. The following specs: 550W semi-modular PSU 1TB HDD (used one) 1TB HDD (new one) TYAN S2932 Dual F 2000 Socket Motherboard 32 GB DDR2 ECC RAM GTX 550Ti 1 GB 5.1 Channel Rosewill Sound Card (new) 2x AMD Opteron 1.9 GHz Quad Core Silent Fan cooling system--I frequently forget the computer is on. It is dead quiet. (new) I gathered that $700 (pricing based off amazon.com) was too much to ask. People were emailing me hate messages saying that $700 is astronomical for a "crap pc". So I believe the problem lies with me. How would you price a used custom PC? Thank you for your time.
