  1. My computer-made-NAS definitely needs an upgrade, so I was planning on trading a 240GB SSD to a friend so I could use their 120GB SSD for caching my drives. i think everyone should have an SSD because caching is great, and well... boot times.
  2. Yep. Having ordered from them I can say that the packing is pretty great for a smaller seller, the replacement policy is the bomb (I had a RAID card which failed, had a new server to me in two days).
  3. Hey everyone, I've started building a homelab and http://www.baddogservers.com/ has been a huge help to me, providing me with cheap servers and rails. If anyone's interested in enterprise grade gear, they've got some older rackmount stuff for stupid cheap, all the way up to some LGA1366 stuff that you can put some X5560's in etc. At the moment they've got a deal going on where you can get 20% off your total store purchase with the code ian20off, This means you can get stuff like a Dell R710 for $525, or a PowerEdge with dual processors for $124! Like stated before, this stuff is older but is great practice if you want to get into sysadmin stuff later on in life. Rails are super cheap at only $15 a pop, and shipping is free in the US if you're buying anything worth buying. Also, it looks like if you create an account you get 5% off the total store order, which sure wasn't around when I was ordering from them. Thanks, enjoy the servers. TL;DR 20% off total store order at http://www.baddogservers.com/ with code ian20off -Shuckle
  4. I hope all of LinusMediaGroup understands how much they've helped me get into computers. From wanting to buy an Alienware MX14 a few years back to building two of my own gaming desktops, a server, and multiple friends' PC I feel like I've come along way. I fully support the switch to Vessel, if that's what's required to keep doing the incredible work you guys do, and I expect a full new office tour (once ready of course, remember, no early access). Anyway, as much as support Linus and the rest of their team, I still want their stuff. Twitter: https://twitter.com/pc_paragon/status/580470729134776320 Does MySpace count? Either way, congrats goes to whoever wins, and I hope LinusMediaGroup never stops producing. -Shuckle
  5. I've got my hotel booked. I live a few short hours away from San Antonio, so I'm looking forward to it.
  6. So uh... Who's going to PAX South in San Antonio? -Shuckle
  7. Why not OnePlusOne? I've had it for a month or so, and I'm extremely impressed.
  8. Thanks! I've found that with only 1 drive, I can get decent airflow (as good as can be expected in the H440).
  9. Hello the viewers of LinusTechTips and fellow PC Gaming Brothers! I've been a lurker on this forum for quite a while, but I've decided it's time to post my build. I call it the H.A.L 9000, and while not as powerful as the original H.A.L 9000 of Space Odyssey 2001, I'm still pretty proud of it. You can see the basic specs in my signature, and my profile, but I'll post them here as well, for the sake of convenience. SPECS: MAIN DESKTOP (H.A.L 9000): I am guilty of bad cable management in the back. I stuffed as much as I could into the basement, and barely spent time on the rest. You don't even want to see the foam on the back panel... What do I use the H.A.L 9000 for? Photoshop, Premiere Elements 11, and of course, gaming. I've been enjoying the Metro Games recently, however I've been sucked into Elite: Dangerous since buying it last week. If there any CMDRs out here, feel free to add Lochard Vallance as a friend. The GTX 980 should be coming some time next week, I'll update this when it gets here. THINGS TO DO: Ship in GTX 780 and get GTX 980 980 received and installed. Put in RGB LEDs with IR control Put a H.A.L 9000 eye on the front panel SERVER: Cable management outside the case: (It's easier than you think) Thank you very much for reading, and I'd be happy to hear your opinions and constructive/instructive criticism!
  10. Building a $400 gaming PC with "futureproofing" is nigh impossible. This is about as low as you can go for budget building. An APU option would be... http://pcpartpicker.com/p/Lxs2ZL A seperate GPU/CPU configuration would be something like this... http://pcpartpicker.com/p/8fvM23 Anyway, as stated above, I would save your money for an $800 or even $1000 build (sweet spot imo). Welcome to the forum! -Shuckle
  11. I've found that XFX are pretty decent quality.
  12. Thanks so much for the quick replies guys! I'll try that now. I originally tried e-mailing them, but then saw the "business only" message shortly afterwards... Anyway, wish me luck! Edit - Firearm2112, I'd love to see some pics of your build when it's done, it seems to share a lot of similar parts from mine. ;D
  13. Hello everyone! I'm currently a sophomore in high school and I've been assigned a project by my Computer Science class to attempt to contact someone famous. Naturally my thoughts went to our incredible mentor Linus, and of course, Luke. I'm ashamed to say that I've been a bit of a lurker on these forums, but I've decided to combo this as my hello, and an attempt to catch Linus's eye, although I realize that it's probably futile. Either way, hello everyone! -Shuckle
  14. I found Linus Tech Tips when I was looking for a review of the Fractal Design R4, back when I thought I wanted that for my build (I ended up with an H440). I gotta say, one of my favorite videos was the STD... As strange as that sounds. For my favorite food, I gotta say that I love the smell of mad console users in the morning... -Shuckle
