It's funny, as soon as we come out of the dark ages of CPUs (years and years of quad cores), we enter the dark ages of GPUs. Well actually, it's been dark for a while because of mining prices, but seeing MSRPs so high just makes me feel genuinely sad. And keep in mind, we haven't exactly been buying GPUs at MSRP lately.

It's getting harder and harder to recommend PC gaming to people. The days of "faster and cheaper than consoles" are dead. Also, with new GPUs costing so much, I can see eBay prices raising already.

Let's just hope team red or blue can do something about it, but I mean, is it gonna be too little too late? And my hopes for AMD being competitive with Nvidia are pretty much dead. Hell, even when AMD does have a competitive product, they don't sell, so it just seems hopeless. I also can't believe people are acting hyped about this new generation. I mean come on, 600$ for a fucking 2070? We waited two years for THAT? The 980ti's MSRP was only 50$ higher than that. Let's just say you have a lot of money and you don't care about price, well how short sighted.

Everything else (besides RAM pricing) is moving forward, you can get a 250GB SSD for less than 50$, a 500GB SSD for 80$, a 8 core CPU for less than 300$ (when that cost 1000$ just a couple years ago), a really capable APU for 80$, etc. But with graphics being so expensive, it makes that progress mean a lot less. We've gone nowhere. All that money you're saving elsewhere will be burned on buying your 500 DOLLAR MID RANGE GPU.

Welp, wake me up in 2020.

To help put it in perspective, here's a brief history of MSRP over recent years. (According to Wikipedia.)

2013

770: $399

780: $649

780ti: $699

2014

970: $329

980: $549

980ti: $649

2016

1070: $379

1080: $549

1080ti: $699

2018

2070: $499 ($599 for the FE)

2080: $699 ($799 for the FE)

2080ti: $999 ($1200 for the FE!)

Want a bigger slap in the face? In 2007, the 9800gt cost 250$. Fucking. Ow. Member' when people were outraged at the 1000$ Titan? Those were the days apparently.

Hate to be so negative, but that's just how I feel right now. I didn't expect prices to come down, the MSRPs were just fine as they were, but price INCREASES? Just come on.

Thats what happens when you have one company at the top with little to no competition.  I suspect Nvidia will get complacent in their pricing and as soon as a competitor whether its AMD or Intel comes with something comparatively similar but cheaper they will lower their prices and people will buy them since they are the known quantity.  From there its anyones game.
