  1. Actually, yeah I think the only real solution is to ditch the Wraith stealth and get an actual cooler. Yup BTW thank you all for the help and the quick responses!
  2. Unfortunately, we only did a stress test on ubuntu, not a benchmark test. It could have been interesting to see a Cinebench score or similar. We have both the same case with the same fans, and did the test with no side panel. I don't think this is the cause. This. I also think there's something going on with the cheap motherboard. As you can see, the hot CPU is handled waay better on my motherboard than on his, so it is defintely a factor. However, there is no justification for an RMA and it's too late for returning it. We'll have to deal with this motherboard for the time being. I already contacted the seller and they said that this issue falls withing the warranty. They asked me to send it to them and they will check the CPU. My friend is willing to live without a PC for several weeks, so we will send it. We'll see what happens. And whether they end up refusing or not, he is defintely buying a new cooler next month.
  3. Back in January I helped a friend build a PC with a 5600X. These days the weather has been warming up and he has been experiencing sporadic shutdowns from overheating, even with the side panel off. While playing Rainbow Six Seige it easily gets over 90 C with no side panel. I reapplied new thermal paste and it made no difference. Yesterday I brought my PC (which also has a 5600X) to his house and we did a bit of experimenting. Both PCs with the same CPU, stock cooler, case (no side panel) and both in the same room, we did a stress test with an Ubuntu live USB and default BIOS settings. We got: My PC: 77 C His PC: 85 C Then we swapped the 5600X’s and we got: My PC: 82 C His PC: 80C Then we played Rainbow Six on Windows and we got: My PC: 86 C His PC: 84 C Then we swapped the CPUs and played RS:S again: My PC: 78 C His PC: 91 C In short, swapping his 5600X with mine decreased his temps around 5~7°C and solved the high temp shutdowns. When I installed his CPU in my PC my temps increased 5~8°C, but they weren't as dramatic (I think my motherboard handles power better, maybe). I know that due to the silicon lottery each CPU is unique, but it seems like there’s a huge temp difference between the two units. I’m willing to bet that his CPU is defective, but I’m not sure if the seller will think the same. I will try to RMA the unit but I don’t know if I’m just wasting my time. Is it common to have an overheating CPU? What do you think? Also, I am aware that using a stock cooler is not the best option, but IMO it shouldn’t provoke shutdowns with no overclocking. And another thing, since we built his PC he has suffered recurring stability problems (BSODs) even with default BIOS settings and no XMP, and the cause has remained unknown. In a way, I’m hoping the stability issues gets resolved with a new CPU, but no one knows. His specs: My specs:
  4. Thanks! It's a little bit pricey for my budget (€1500 EUR for the i5 base model here in Europe) but I'll look into it (this laptop looks great).
  5. Hello people! I just had an issue with an ASUS laptop and here is the story. A few weeks ago, I planned to buy a lightweight laptop with the intention of playing some games and doing some amateur digital art; therefore I needed a laptop with an IPS screen at the very least. I decided to buy the asus ROG G501VW with a FHD display from an online shop who stated on their website that it had an IPS panel (even if it wasn’t a great one, according to notebookcheck.net). Then when it arrived, it struck to me that it wasn’t IPS at all. It was obvious. I took photos of the really poor viewing angles, wrote down the model of the screen (N156HGE-EAL from Chi Mei), and decided to call this shop. Fortunately, the shop dealt with the issue quite well, they took responsibility for the misunderstanding and gave my money back. So, in the end, things turned out good for me. After all this I should add that I noticed that the business owner was really mad at his distributor and at ASUS for giving false information, and he told me that I probably wasn’t the only one affected, at least here in my country. I didn’t expect a company like ASUS lying on their specifications like that. Anyway, I just wanted to rant a little bit and ask if somebody had heard of similar experiences like this one with ASUS laptops. And, apart from that, I’d like ask for a little help deciding what to do next. Probably the 1080 IPS model for the G501VW doesn’t exist in Spain (I guess) so the only option regarding the G501VW would be to get the 4K model (for extra $$) which I know for sure is available as IPS. Or maybe I could DIY it by buying the samsung IPS panel from ebay and replacing it by myself (bad option, but doable). The best option would be to get a different laptop, but I’m at a loss. What laptop would you recommend? My must-have list would be: 1. IPS screen (even if it isn’t “the best”) 2. Moderately lightweight/thin (at least no more than 2.2kg) 3. Can play games (at low settings at least) 4. Moderately powerful 5. Around €1,100 EUR ($1,150 USD) but I could extend the budget a little if justified. I will be incredibly thankful if someone could help me out. (And btw, sorry for such a long post)
  6. I recently bought the most basic keyboard-staple: the K120; since my trusty 10+ year old membrane keyboard died recently. Frankly, a mechanical keyboard would be beyond my posibilities.
  7. I reccomended everyone of my friends and family members to upgrade to an ssd as soon as they could. It's so much faster, and there's no denying that any OS works noticeably better on it. Sadly enough, I don't have one yet! So yes, getting an ssd is my long-awaited upgrade...
  8. How the heck did they fit all that within such a small case?? Oh well. Sincerely, I've always wanted to have a small pc, maybe for using it as tv console, maybe as a beefy htpc, but with such a powerful gpu it could easily be used for cs:go lan parties. I've transported my +10kg, full-tower PC too many times, and all I can say is that it is a tough thing to do. This zotac mini pc is wayyyyyyyyyy better for that. So... yeahh, sometimes small is better.
  9. I've been knowing him since I decided to upgrade my computer for gaming, way back then in 2009 when I didn't know a darn thing about computer hardware and my parents refused to buy me a ps3 or an xbox360 at the time, but accepted to let me upgrade the computer. I remember the frustration when I faced the huge amount of new concepts, but Linus and other people made it a little bit easier, and I really liked it. I blame upon him that I am now passionate about computer stuff. But it's been so long that I can not remember exactly the first video I watched. However I think one of the first might be about a cpu cooler (maybe a noctua one) unboxed in "the Park", but I don't seem to be able to find it. At least I can remember clearly the feeling of perplexity seeing someone unboxing pc hardware on a park. And yes, I sometimes miss cameraman... snif

  12. I have heard of people rendering videos while gaming on this thing, and being able to do that it just sounds freakin awesome!!! Anyways, such a powerful cpu would help me a lot with my video editing.
  13. That PSU has an impresive, awesome look!, apart from being super silent, modular, gold efficiency... FTW! That's gotta me mine!!
  14. Wow, that card looks beefy!! The new gtx970 is the perfect card to buy: an incredible performance at that sweet price-point. Wish I had the money I guess I'll have to stick to my ol' trusty 9800gtx+ until then.....
