  1. http://gizmodo.com/look-out-hdmi-and-displayport-theres-a-new-cable-in-to-1677194299 Ever heard of Mobile High-Definition Link, or MHL for short? Today, it's a way to connect a smartphone to a HDTV or monitor via microUSB. But the new SuperMHL could challenge HDMI and DisplayPort dominance over your entire home theater. Today, the MHL Consortium (which consists of Samsung, Sony, Toshiba, Nokia and chipmaker Silicon Image) is showing off SuperMHL, a new specification which leapfrogs both HDMI 2.0 and DisplayPort 1.3. It can carry ridiculously detailed 8K video signals at 120 frames per second, with 4:2:0 pixels and 32-bit color, as well as 40W of power and fancy surround sound setups like Dolby Atmos and DTS-UHD. A single SuperMHL source can drive up to eight displays, and you can remote control SuperMHL devices similarly to HDMI. The catch: to get all that goodness at the same time, you need a new cable too, with a new 32-pin SuperMHL connector on both ends. While the SuperMHL protocol works over USB, including the fancy new reversible USB Type-C, MHL president Rob Tobias explained to Gizmodo that you only get four lanes that way. That's enough bandwidth for 8K video at 60fps, or 4K video at 120fps if you want to use USB 3.0 at the same time. Standard microUSB only gives you one lane for a maximum of 4K at 60fps. The SuperMHL port. And since both of those are fairly small phone-grade connectors anyhow, you'll probably want a full-size, six-lane SuperMHL connector anyways. Not like that would necessarily be a bad thing: the new connector's reversible, unlike HDMI or DisplayPort, so you can plug it in without fussing about whether it's upside down when you're blindly reaching around the back of your A/V reciever. Except, of course, that if the SuperMHL connector becomes a standard, that will make for more competition in a field where competition can actually be icky. It was kind of nice having HDMI be The One Cable To Rule Them All, since I knew it would always work everywhere. The popularity of Mini DisplayPort in laptops like the MacBook Air and my ThinkPad X240 threw a tiny wrench in that. But at least all of today's video signals are more or less compatible. I'll probably just need to buy one more adapter.

  3. Thanks a lot for all this work. i'll take a look at it and play around with the options.
  4. ok thanks for the info. Don't care too much about overclocking. maybe in the 3rd year of this pc i may need to, but if i end up getting another 970, i should be fine.
  5. using pcpartspicker, it looks to be cheaper to pay them to build it for me.
  6. Pc gamer since the mid 80's. Never been someone to build a pc from scratch. I buy a new pc every 3 years, use same as cash financing and pay it over 6 months, etc.. usually spend between $1300 to 2000$ every time. Going to use cyberpowerpc this time. this is what i have built. Comes in at $1686. Any advice/ideas, please share. Case: AZZA Silentium 920B ( I like ultra quiet pcs) CPU: i5-4690 3.50 6mb Cooling: corsair hydro series h60 120mm cooling Motherboard: asus z97-a atx Memory: 16gb ddr3/2133mhz corsair vengeance video: EVGA FTW edition gtx 970. ( might sli in the future) power supply: 750 watt corsair cs, series cs750m 80 plus gold, ultra quiet Hard drive: 256gb corsair force lx series sata 3. Hard drive 2nd: 1tb in raid mirror Optical: lg 12x blu ray Sound: Creative labs audigy (I just can't believe motherboard sound could be as good, old timer here, am i wrong?) I added anti vibration fan mounts and a power supply gasket for noise. Standard motherboard lan, i have a killer lan/motherboard now, but too many issues, i figure a standard one should be fine no? Any ideas? should i go for the i7-4790k 4.0 ghz 8mb cpu instead for an extra $130? I figure any ssd would be a huge upgrade over what i'm used to, prices vary greatly, with the intel 730 ones being very expensive. any need for extra case fans? is the power supply good enough in case i add another 970 a year or two from now? Motherboard ok? that is one thing i know nothing about.. so many options. This one should be sli capable, and has raid. Thanks a lot all. pcpartpicker url. http://pcpartpicker.com/p/vfBX3C
  7. Or is it just dependent on how video cards talk to monitors, etc.. and only a gsync/freesync monitor will help. Currently having a nvidia 560ti, will the tearing decrease once i go to a 970?
  8. Where is a good place to buy korean monitors? ebay?
  9. Just got my first ips monitor. the asus vs278. my first 27 inch 1080p ips monitor. I had 2 24 inch tn 1680x1050 monitors before this, i still use one of them as a 2nd monitor for youtube only. The ips monitor is definitely brighter then my tn. I guess that makes the colors brighter and prettier. But the way people talked about ips panels, i just expected more of a difference. Viewing angles doesn't mean anything to me, i'm facing my 2 monitors. The monitor is fine, it just seems to me that people make such a huge distinction between the two, and i just don't really see it. Looking at 1080p landscapes, etc.. between them, the ips is brighter. more colorful i guess.. The new asus rog gsync monitor has been getting such amazing reviews, and everyone saying it is the best looking tn monitor out there.. maybe the difference between the 2 technologies isn't as large as we used to think they are. Maybe older gen tn panels vs ips were, but maybe that gap is almost gone, and maybe the 120/144hz benefit of a tn panel outweighs the ips panel benefits.
  10. Just got the asus vs278 a 27 inch ips 1080p monitor and i have to agree i would of preferred to get 1440 instead. It will cost you like 150-200$ more, but having this monitor for a day now, i think the higher res would of been better. and just fyi, you can get an amazon store card and it will allow you to finance things from 6 months to 24 months. i did the 6 months option on this purchase.
  11. Are ips monitors brighter then tn monitors? is that why people say colors look better on ips monitors? Having a hard time getting used to the brightness, have it turned down to 35 for now. The monitor looks great and it's amazing how much bigger a 27 inch is over a 24 inch.
  12. I have the evga 560ti. I"m guessing you are right it might be a mini hdmi. so you think getting a mini hdmi to hdmi cable is better then a dvi to displayport or hdmi cable?
  13. Just bought the Asus vs278q-p to act as my main, until i buy a gsync/freesync monitor. It will be replacing my 24 inch samsung syncmaster 225bw. My nvidia 560ti has 2 dvi connections, and a third connection (not sure what it is) The monitor has one display port, 2 hdmi and a vga connector. I'm assuming display port is best, followed by hdmi then dvi?? i'll have to use a dvi to display port cable for now until i upgrade my pc in a few months with a nvidia 970.
