So my dad got a 27 inch iMac 5k Retina mid-2017. He got the base model with only 8GB of ram (2x4).

I was considering upgrading it with either a 1x16 or 2x8 GB ram kit.

On apple’s website, it says

DDR4-2400,

260-pin SODIMM

non-ecc unbuffered

and nonparity. (don’t know what that means).

I looked at ram on PCPP that fit those specs except nonparity and found this:

With apple being apple, would that work or do I have to get special “Mac memory” from like OWC or Crucial?

Also would a 1x16 kit be better than a 2x8?

Thx for taking your time to answer, If this belongs in a different section like all-in-ones or prebuilts, please let me know.

1x16 would be better for capacity and expandability.

Ok but is the ram compatible?

It should be, I haven't heard of problems with using non-Apple memory.

To be safe though, it might be a good idea to use Apple-specific memory from Crucial or someone.

Ok, I will look at prices for OWC and crucial Mac ram. I have seen youtubers use G. Skill ripjaws Ram. I might just use that to be safe.

thank you!
