First PC graphics card

I am looking to make my first PC since I currently play on a Mac and well #PCMasterRace. I was wondering about what range should I go for with my graphics card. I was thinking something like a GTX 1060 or 1070 once the new series comes out which will cause the price to drop. Are these good options? I'm obviously not looking for the highest end performance in games, just something that won't want to make me throw up. Also if you could give me a price that I should pay for both, or if you had another GPU in mind please give a price. Thanks for any help you can provide.

We need to know what resolution your monitor is.  This effectively determines how much video card HP you need.

 

Minimum I'd go with a 1060 6GB, any dual or triple fan version is fine, for a standard 1080p monitor.  1070 for 1440p monitor or a high refresh 1080p.  

 

Under $300 for a 1060 6GB, under $400 for a 1070.

1060 and 1070 are both excellent cards. I would rather go for a 1160 though as it will most likely outperform the 1070 even.

1060 6GB runs 1440p fine if it isn't AAA games and on ultra settings according to a lot of benchmarks I've looked at. The 1050 ti is fine for 1080p for medium-high quality and the 1060 3GB is good for high quality 1080p gaming (definitely not ultra). This of course only applies to 60fps and not to higher, you likely need a 1070 then. I would get a 1160 if it's about the same price.

The 1060 6GB may run non-AAA games at 1440p at non-ultra, I will accede that.  But what happens in 12 months when games push the envelope further?  Keep reducing settings?

 

Buy a card for the future, not the present. For AAA titles, because in 6 months a AAA title may come out you really want to play.

I’d love to be able to get a 1160 however for my price range even 300 is a little much to be spending on a GPU. And the new series will likely cost much more

I've found a couple of options that I think would work. I found an RX-480, which I figure is about as good as a 1060 for $250. But I might be able to get it down a little bit. I also found a GTX 1070 Founders edition for $300. Are either of these good deals and are they worth getting?
