The 600 series is supposedly more of the same, but still slightly better. I'd advocate starting out with a 600 series, but if you've already got a 500 series you should really try something different.

 

This has nothing against me liking or not liking a company. You know the graphs, and I've had most of their headphones, they both agree.

 

Also I don't dislike sennhesier, I just dislike sennhesiers headphone line, and how there aren't any real improvements as you go up in their product tier. The only headphones that are a real upgrade from the 5 and 6 series is the HD700/HD800 which still aren't that great for the money.

I think the HiFiman HE-400 fall in to that price bracket as well. Could be an interesting alternative if you've ever wanted to try planar magnetics. It would definitely help if you could find a place to try stuff yourself and find out what you like, but I do realize that is often not possible.
