So I've been working on getting Lubuntu to work on my Athlon 64 system, and finally got it to install.

However now, none of the displays I connect to it will work. I end up getting errors that say "Cannot display this video mode. Optimal resolution is..." and then it goes on to state the default resolution and refresh rate of either display.

1600x900 60Hz, and 1280x1024 60Hz.

This has me stumped, since it's giving me an error with the monitor at default settings, but then claims that the optimal resolution is the monitor's default settings.

specs:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+

Asus A8AE-LE AM2 motherboard

4x512mb DDR memory

WD 250Gb SATA HDD

GeForce 6200 PCI

Both of my displays are connecting via VGA.

Both displays also worked when I had Windows XP installed.

Are you using a proper updated Nvidia Driver for Ubuntu?

No, I just installed it and restarted.

Might try reinstalling and seeing if that gets me anywhere.

I recently installed Ubuntu on a second partition of my secondary drive, and it ended up using the iGPU on my i5-8400 than defaulting to the card it was run off of. It took a while for it to understand where it screwed up. :(

My system is defaulting to my dGPU.

Bear in mind this is XP era hardware(except for maybe the GPU), so it's designed differently than modern parts. Seems to be reinstalling without much trouble.

What kind of Ubuntu installation are you doing? Are you having it install all of the features and drivers when it sets up?

I haven't gotten that far this time around. It's been stuck on the loading screen for some time now...

If it doesnt go past that, then get back to me.

I'm gonna try a direct install instead of trying without installing.

Will do :)

If it hasn't installed anything, then reboot.

What do I do after rebooting? Because booting normally is what gets me to the screen that I mentioned in my original post, and installing doesn't seem to be getting anywhere either.

What version of Ubuntu are you trying to install?

If you aren't using the LTS version, I recommend installing that version.

Lubuntu 18.04. I don't believe it's LTS

(time to spend another hour or so downloading the iso).

It's kind of late here, I might come back to this tomorrow.

I have a quick question: Does the screen go black after the POST screen?

I'll try booting up right now and I'll get back to you.

For a second or two, yes.

Then it'll bring up the Ubuntu boot screen.
