local network and wired internet?

I am currently using ethernet for internet. i'd like to know whether can use ethernet for internet while being connected to a local network. I'm on a laptop btw.

Some modems do not allow this without using a router.  If your current modem has more than one ethernet port it should work fine.

It would obviously be best to have a router. Both for security and for ease of use.

If you were to only use just a modem and switch it would require you to have or buy enough WAN IP's for each of the clients you wanted to access the internet.
