How would you go about transferring files from one computer to another that are on the same network? I would like to avoid a homegroup as I randomly get prompts for a network password when trying to enter the folder that is set to be shared, or the other computer just isn't listed for a while (the computer will pop up after some time if i'm patient enough).

Setup sharing in windows, there is a way to avoid the password stuff and just have a folder that lists all the shared folders on that pc. Though i only did that 2-3 times a long time ago so can't help you much there.

I wish there was a program like skype, but just for file transfer between pc's.

Something wrong with your connection ?

Run the damn cable :)

If you want to avoid all impediments to network file sharing, you can add 'Everyone' to the Permissions under Advanced Sharing in the Sharing tab in the Folder's Properties. And also in the Users under the Security tab. And give everyone Full control if you are going to be moving things both ways from multiple machines. Also, it is best if shared directories are right on the root of the drive. As Windows can add more hidden hurdles when sharing from User or Program Files. They're not impossible to overcome (especially using the above method), but one step at a time, eh?

You can ensure a modicum more security by having the same user account/password on each machine and making sure that user is listed in the aforementioned areas. (Homegroup is MS's way of automating this). You could also poke at the credential manager...there are a ton of ways to go about this. It all depends on what EXACTLY you are trying to accomplish and how secure you feel you need it. The above method will provide a wide open pipe to shuffle things around.

And rufee: Live Mesh did this exact thing. Worked similar to how SkyDrive/Dropbox works, but would check with machines on the local network and sync locally instead of funneling everything through the cloud first. But for a myriad of reasons they killed it and now SkyDrive is their only offering. Also it had free remote desktop from ANYWHERE.
