Sorry if this isn't the right section to post this, it seemed most appropriate.

I am trying to work out how to build a powerful pc which can be used to boost the power of any pc connect up to it.

So essentially imagine a crappy laptop which once plugged into this machine has access to all of its power on top of the laptops own power. The goal is to do this but allow for multiple pcs to be able to connect at once. Now I understand that in theory, I could just have it so that each machine connects to the powerful machine using VMs, but this would ignore the power of the pc you're already using, which could be substantial.

I also understand that the latency of whichever connection was used would likely be too much to ever utilize gaming this way, but it would allow for rendering and other demanding programs could be run on whatever you want.

So finally, the question is does anyone know if any software exists that can do this? If not, I am a computer scientist and so any material which would reduce the amount of work required to build this myself would be appreciated.

For a general use case, what you are describing is a distributed o/s that can run on some sort of heterogeneous assembly of systems. There is a fair amount of literature on the topic.See also the related topic of network o/s.

There are specific use cases, particularly in the area of design & content creation software. A number of products support assemblies of systems devoted to rendering.
