First mechanical keyboard?

Ok. So im looking at investing in a mechanical keyboard. I am a little lost though. I will mostly be using it for gaming but i will still be typing stuff for school. I am a little lost about which switch to use. I was thinking blues or reds. i would like to spend like 100$. A backlight would be nice but it isn't a big deal if it doesn't have it. Thoughts?

If you want to try out blues and have a "backup board", the one in my sig is a good first Mechanical Keyboard imo.

I'm going to start copy-pasting this.

First, check out these two links:

Tek Syndicate Mechanical Keyboard Buyer's Guide

Mechanical Keys Explained (imgur)

Then head over to MechanicalKeyboards.com and use their search engine to find a keyboard that you might like. Their selection is kinda limited, but it will give you a good idea of what's available. If you don't mind spending a few extra dollars, MaxKeyboard.com has a customization tool that allows you to configure keyboards to your exact liking.

It's really, really hard to go wrong when buying a mechanical board. Cherry switches are Cherry switches no matter what they're attached to, and unless you buy from some totally obscure manufacturer, you shouldn't have to worry much about overall build quality.

Just find a switch type you like on a layout you like with a budget you can afford and you're golden.
