What cables are needed?

Ok, noob alert so try not judge me too hard. I am looking into buying a new monitor for my setup and new GPU (1070 or 1080). If I get a monitor with 144hz refresh rate, what cable will I need to get that full 144hz refresh? Can the HDMI do the 144hz at a lower resolution or will I need to roll with a display port cable? Any help would be great and links to the cords I would need would also be greatly appreciated.
