No IPv4 address?

Sir_Ryan
Go to solution Solved by Sakkura,

If everything works fine, there's nothing you need to do.

The reason you're getting an IPv6 address instead of IPv4 is that your ISP has likely run out of available IPv4 addresses. That's in turn because the regional internet registries that hand out blocks of IPv4 addresses to ISPs have also pretty much run out; IPv4 just doesn't have enough addresses.

Hey everyone!

First off, let me say I don't know much compared to most of you- but I do know quite a bit compared to the average consumer (but I still don't know much.) Also ignore my Australian English if I use it at any point....

I like to host lots of game servers, and recently I needed my IP address, so I go onto google and search "What is my ip." Instead of getting an IPv4 address, I receive an IPv6 one (I think it is at least.) See image 1 (those asterisks weren't there, I need to protect my privacy at some point.)

So, at this point I try a few different websites all giving me the same result. And then I go to myip.ms and it tells me that my connection is not IPv4 compatible. The hostname is also my IPv6 address (not sure if it's relevant.)

I tried this on my phone which also had the same results.

The internet works fine and everything is great and I can use my DNS address to access my hosted website as well.

If anyone could explain why this is happening and anything I should do, that would be great!

Looking at news articles etc it seems like they run out of ipv4 addresses indeed.
But probably you want an IPv4 address for your game server because a lot of games don't support ipv6 addresses yet. So you probably want to contact your ISP.

Ring Telstra, ask for a ipv4 static address.

Try an IP release and renew then reboot your router first.

Thanks both of you! Really cleared everything up.

Will definitely be in touch with my ISP. While searching around I did see some of the articles that you were talking about and I did have a feeling that it might've had to do with that!

We're moving away from IPv4 in favor of IPv6. It's perfectly normal (and I find IPv6 sexier)
